Researchers urge Campylobacter focus in the Czech Republic

Scientists in the Czech Republic have called for a national reference laboratory for human Campylobacter infections to be created in the country.

From 2018 to 2021, 81,115 cases were reported in the electronic Infectious Disease Information System (ISIN). Slightly more men than women were sick. Campylobacter jejuni makes up the majority of cases followed by Campylobacter coli. The highest incidence was in people aged 1 to 4 years old.

Almost 10,000 people were hospitalized and 34 deaths were reported including five children younger than 5, three teenagers, seven people aged 21 to 35, and 19 people older than 57.

Preventative measures should be aimed at children younger than 5 because of the high incidence and people older than 80 who are at higher risk of severe illness and hospitalization, said scientists.

In terms of precautionary consumer protection, the product “Koska Susam Krokan Sesame 40g” has a best before date of December 14th, 2023; Lot number 99-165/22 recalled by SABEX Handelsgesellschaft mbH.

Due to the possible presence of Salmonella, it cannot be ruled out that there is a potential health hazard. Foodstuffs contaminated with salmonella can cause stomach and intestinal diseases (salmonellosis) in consumers, whereby health impairments can occur in children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems in particular.

It is therefore not recommended to consume this product.

For safety reasons, the entire inventory of the product, i.e. ALL best-before dates / batches, has been withdrawn from sale. Affected products that have already been purchased can now be returned without a receipt.

The supplier SABEX Handelsgesellschaft mbH regrets the incident and apologizes to all customers for the inconvenience caused.

The warning does not state that the health hazard was caused by the producer, manufacturer, importer or distributor.

Finsbråten is recalling grilled sausages 440 grams with a use-by date of 19.05.2023, and Vienna sausages 560 grams and 1050 grams with a use-by date of 18.05.2023, 19.05.2023 and 20.05.2023. The reason is suspicion of listeria bacteria in the products.

The withdrawal applies to the following goods:

  • Product name: Grill sausages 440 grams, Vienna sausage 560g and Vienna sausage 1050 g.
  • Name of the company that is recalling the goods: Finsbråten AS
  • Item number: 11401, 11200, 11241 and 11261
  • Production activities: Leiv Vidar AS
  • Last consumption day: 18/05/2023, 19/05/2023, 20/05/2023.

The product is sold in the stores of Rema 1000, Coop, Norgesgruppen and Oda. The product must have been removed from the stores.

Consumers who have purchased the products are asked to throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

Listeria bacteria can pose a risk of serious illness in pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

The bacterium grows well at refrigerator temperature, and is easily killed by heat treatment. The product is marked with “must be heat treated”, and is safe to eat when heat treated at 72 degrees.
