Ottawa, October 22, 2019 – The food recall warning issued on October 21, 2019 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

Industry is recalling various raw beef and raw veal products from the marketplace due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. Consumers should not consume and distributors, retailers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not sell or use the recalled products described below.

The following products have been sold as indicated in the table below.

Research – Probiotics Lactobacillus strains: A promising alternative therapy against to biofilm-forming enteropathogenic bacteria?

Biofilms formation stands out in context of persistent intestinal infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae, which are associated with a high resistance to antimicrobial agents’ and phagocytosis by host defense cells. Hence, understanding the mechanisms involved in this process becomes major for the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies. Lactic acid bacteria, including species of the genus Lactobacillus, have been associated with the prevention or dispersion of biofilms formed by pathogenic microorganisms. This effect is often associated with the antimicrobial substances production, among them organic acids, bacteriocins, hydrogen peroxide and biorsurfactants. However, the antibiofilm action of Lactobacillus seems to be strain-specific and may not be demonstrated by strains of the same genus. Thus, diet supplementation with beneficial microorganisms represents a possible strategy for prevention and treatment of intestinal infectious diseases, such as persistent or acute diarrhea caused by enteropathogenic bacteria. However, in vitro and in vivo further studies are needed to clarify the efficacy of different probiotic candidates, including commercially available products.

 

USA – 59 tons of egg rolls recalled for being “packed under insanitary conditions”

St. Louis-based T & R Enterprise USA Inc. has recalled approximately 118,000 pounds of meat and poultry egg roll products that were produced and packed under insanitary conditions, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The meat and poultry egg roll items were produced on various dates from Aug. 1, 2019 to Sept. 26, 2019.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 33792” or “P33792” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to institutional locations in Georgia and Missouri.

The problem was discovered while FSIS was conducting routine food inspection activities.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Norovirus – 3 Aida Cruises voyages experience outbreaks

Health officials report investigating three norovirus outbreaks onboard voyages with Aida Cruises vessel, AIDAdiva.

The first outbreak was on a September 5–23, 2019 voyage. 125 passengers and crew had symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting. The causative agent was determined to be norovirus.

The second outbreak was on a September 28–October 12, 2019 voyage. On this trip, 95 passengers and crew were infected with norovirus.

The most recent voyage was  October 3–13, 2019. On this voyage, 93 passengers and crew were affected.

Iran -University Students Protest In Tehran After 200 Fall Victim To Food Poisoning

More than 200 students at the University of Science and Technology in Tehran have been taken to the hospital for food poisoning at the university’s canteen since Tuesday October 15, Iranian media reported.

The students have staged a sit-in in front of the University in protest to the situation, the reports said.

A student union official told the semi-official news agency ISNA late Wednesday that the Union has called on officials to present a report on the situation within a week, “otherwise, protest gatherings will continue.” This means that the gatherings have been suspended for the time being.

Reports by university officials put the number of those poisoned at 70 but a student leader has told ISNA that at least 197 students including 87 girls have been sent to hospital over that past two days.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.

Symptoms in adults can include facial paralysis or loss of facial expression, unreactive or fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking or including slurred speech, and a change in sound of voice, including hoarseness.

Symptoms of foodborne botulism in children can include difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, generalized weakness and paralysis. In all cases, botulism does not cause a fever.  In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 18506” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to commercial distributors and a cold storage warehouse in Florida.

The problem was discovered when the firm was notified by their third-party laboratory that a sample was positive for E. coli O157:H7, but the products associated with the sample had already been shipped into commerce. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in Commercial Distributor’s freezers. Distributors who have obtained these products are urged not to distribute them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of origin.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F. The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature, https://www.fsis.usda.gov/safetempchart.

UK – Doctor, 47, is struck off after he made £72,000 signing more than 400 bogus sick notes for holidaymakers who were claiming compensation through his wife’s legal firm

A doctor who made £72,000 signing more than 400 bogus sick notes for his wife’s legal firm has been struck off the medical register.

Dr Zuber Bux, 47, filled in false illness reports from holidaymakers claiming compensation from travel firms through his solicitor wife Sehana’s law business.

Over four years Dr Bux, a GP from Blackburn, Lancashire, made about £72,000 writing more than 400 reports but did not inform holiday companies or the courts that his wife worked for AMS, the law firm that instructed him.

A Medical Practitioners Tribunal in Manchester informed Dr Bux that his name has been erased from the medical register due to his ‘dishonesty’ and for the ‘protection of the public’.

USA -FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for Beef Products due to Possible E. coli O157:H7 Contamination

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for raw non-intact beef products derived from imported beef from Ontario, Canada that has been recalled by Ryding-Regency Meat Packers, Ltd. because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation and determined that certain products produced by the company may be contaminated. While Canada is the recalling authority, FSIS is amplifying the recall through this public health alert.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency notified FSIS that several shipments of beef implicated in a series of recalls have been exported to the U.S.  FSIS has identified that imported beef manufacturing trimmings produced on May 27 and 30, 2019 that are subject to recall were used in the U.S. to produce other raw non-intact beef products distributed for retail sale.  The U.S. companies that produced these raw non-intact beef products have received notice of the recall from Ryding-Regency and FSIS has confirmed that they are following the instructions provided to recall affected product from their customers.  However, retail consumers may not have received such notification.

            FSIS is concerned that some product may be in institutional or consumers’ freezers.  Institutions that have these products are urged not to serve them and consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

             E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.
