USA – Fruit Juice Recall Patulin – Mould

Food Poisoning Bulletin

Wegmans is recalling two types of its store brand fruit juices because they contain an unacceptable level of patulin, which is a by-product of mold. Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by molds such as Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Byssochylamys. An ingredient used to make the juices is the problem. Patulin is not Penicillin and it is not a mold. It’s not likely that exposure to patin at the low levels found in the juice would cause any symptoms, but you should not consume it because in laboratory animals it can cause DNA damage and damage the immune and nervous systems.

USA – Extended Recall of Meats – Listeria monocytogenes

Food Poisoning Journallisteria-hp

Manda Packing Company, a Baker, La., establishment, is expanding its recall to include approximately 468,000 pounds of roast beef, ham, turkey breast, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog head cheese, corned beef, and pastrami due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Research – Prevalenc of Samonella on Raw Shelled Peanuts

Ingenta ConnectAflatoxin

Recalls and/or outbreaks associated with Salmonella contamination in peanut-containing products were reported over the past several years. There are very limited data available on the prevalence and concentration of Salmonella on raw shelled peanuts in the United States. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella on raw shelled peanuts in the United States and to estimate that concentration of Salmonella. Samples of Runner- and Virginia-type raw shelled peanuts from the 2008, 2009, and 2010 crop years were proportionately sampled from each growing region, based on 2007 production volume. Of 944 raw shelled peanut samples (375 g each), 22 (2.33%) were positive for Salmonella by the VIDAS Salmonella assay. Salmonella serovars identified in this study included Agona, Anatum, Braenderup, Dessau, Hartford, Meleagridis, Muenchen, Rodepoort, Tennessee, and Tornow. The concentration levels of Salmonella in positive samples, as determined by a most-probable-number assay, were <0.03 to 2.4 MPN/g. These data will be useful when designing and validating processes for the reduction or elimination of Salmonella in peanuts and/or peanut-containing products.

Ireland – Recall Fruit Platters – Salmonella

FSAISalmonella

Freshcut Food Services Limited is recalling SuperValu Fruit Platter with chocolate 685g; Green Orchard Exotic Fruit Salad 400g; Green Orchard Watermelon Wedge 800g and Green Orchard Fruit Platter with dipping chocolate 685g manufactured by them using watermelon from Costa Rica which may be contaminated with Salmonella. Consumers who have already purchased the implicated fruit products should not consume them as they could cause Salmonellosis. Symptoms of Salmonellosis include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever 12-72 hours after consumption.

Research – Thailand –

The Poultry SiteCampylobacter

THAILAND – To reduce Campylobacter prevalence on broiler skin, on-farm biosecurity measures need to be accompanied by controls at the slaughterhouse, according to new research from Thailand.

Even though most Campylobacter-positive broiler skin samples were contaminated with only up to 230 most probable number per gram, a substantial share (13.3 per cent) showed very high Campylobacter numbers on the broiler skin samples (most probable number = infinity; lower confidence limit T0 580 per gram).

The researchers report their data suggest that intense cross-contamination during the slaughter process led to a strong increase of Campylobacter prevalence on broiler skin compared with the prevalence in broiler caeca.

USA – Walmart Recall Pizza – Possible E.coli Contamination

Food Safety News

Walmart is recalling Farm Rich Pizza Slices from its stores nationwide because they may be contaminated with E.coli. The frozen pepperoni pizza slices were sold in 7.2 oz cartons and 22 oz cartons with “EST. 27232″ or “P-27233″ stamped inside the USDA mark of inspection. The “best by” dates for both sizes under recall is May 15 or May 16, 2014.
