USA – Fruit Juice – Clostridium botulinum

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to consume any juice products or other beverages from Juices Incorporated (aka Juices International and Juices Enterprises) of Brooklyn, N.Y. The company’s carrot and beet juice products have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness. Consumers are warned not to consume these products even if they do not look or smell spoiled.

USA – USDA – Recall – Meatballs -Listeria monocytogenes

P.E. & F. Inc., a St. Louis establishment, is recalling approximately 123
pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat meatballs due to possible contamination with
Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food
Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The problem was discovered by FSIS routine sampling for Listeria
monocytogenes
. The company inadvertently did not hold the product pending
test results. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses
associated with consumption of these products.

USA – Recall – Deli Meats – Listeria monocytogenes

Deli meats produced by Manda Packing Company of Baker, La. are being recalled for potential Listeria contamination by a number of retailers, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA’s FSIS). Listeria can cause serious, sometimes fatal illness but, at this time, no illnesses have been associated with the recalled meat.

The problem was initially discovered  by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture when routine testing on a sample of cooked roast beef  taken from a retail establishment on April 5, 2013 was positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The Manda products under recall include: roast beef, ham, turkey breast, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog head cheese, corned beef, and pastrami and were sold under a variety of brand names at grocery store deli counters. In Arkansas the recalled products were sold at Ben E. Keith stores; in Louisiana and Texas they were sold at Brookshire Brothers and Kroger Stores;  in Louisiana they were sold at Dollar General and Piggly Wiggly Stores; in Illinois and Missouri they were sold at Schnuck’s Markets; and they were sold nationwide at Walmart stores.

USA – Recall RTE Roast Beef – Listeria monocytogenes

Perfect Pasta Inc., an Addison, Ill. establishment, is recalling approximately 315 pounds of ready-to-eat roast beef products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following product is subject to recall:

  • 5-lb. packages of “GINA FULLY COOKED ROAST BEEF WITH SEASONED JUICE” with a lot code number of “040615RB” and a pack date of “02-06-13.”

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. 19829” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on February 6, 2013, and distributed to institutions in Chicago.

The problem was discovered by FSIS through microbiological testing by the Agency. After the company received a positive sample for Listeria monocytogenes, most of its products were held but a portion may have been cross-contaminated as a result of equipment not being cleaned between production shifts and shipped into commerce. FSIS and the company have not received reports of illnesses due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

San Jose Valley Veal, a Santa Clara, Calif. establishment, is recalling
approximately 1,260 pounds of veal trimmings that may be contaminated with
E. Coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and
Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

USA – Ground Beef – Salmonella Typhimurium – Outbreaks

An emerging outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium has expanded to five states with 16 people infected with the outbreak strain, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta said Friday.

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)– just 24 hours earlier– announced the existence of the outbreak with seven illnesses in two states, Michigan and Arizona.

CDC said the states and the number of persons infected in the outbreak now includes: Arizona (!), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9), and Wisconsin (3). No deaths have been reported, but 53 percent of the ill persons have required hospitalization.

Food Safety News – Second Outbreak

A second Michigan retail store has recalled about 550 pounds of ground beef products that may be associated with a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak linked to a Macomb County restaurant.

Troy-based Gab Halal Foods recalled various size bags of ground beef, wrapped in clear plastic. The recalled product was produced between Dec. 4, and Dec. 10, 2012 and distributed to the Macomb County restaurant and directly to consumers.

The beef products were sold without labels.

According to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the second recall was initiated out of concern for a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses that may be caused by eating a raw ground beef product at a restaurant in Michigan’s Macomb County.

USA – Two Salmonella Recalls – Ground Beef and RTE Pork Products

Jouni Meats, Inc., a Sterling Heights, Mich. retail store, is recalling
approximately 500 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with a
strain of Salmonella Typhimurium, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s
Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Stallings Head Cheese Co., Inc., a Houston, Texas establishment, is recalling
4,700 pounds of hog head cheese that may be contaminated with
Salmonella, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and
Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Hog head cheese products produced by EST. 2257 have been linked to a recent
Salmonella Uganda cluster involving six case-patients from Louisiana.

Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canadian Establishment 720, Aliya’s Foods Limited, for approximately 4,865 pounds of frozen butter chicken and rice products imported from Canada that may be contaminated with Listeria
monocytogenes
.

The Ultimate Meatless Burger and Falafel, from VEGGIE PATCH, with the specific use-by dates and UPC codes listed below were distributed to a select number of retailers and distributors.

  • 9-ounce trays of refrigerated, fully cooked, VEGGIE PATCH, The Ultimate Meatless Burger with a Use-By date, Jan/12/2013; UPC code 6-10129-00211-5 (which can be found on back of package)
  • 9-ounce trays of refrigerated, fully cooked, VEGGIE PATCH, Falafel with a Use-By date, Jan/15/2013; UPC code 6-10129-06619-3 (which can be found on back of package)

The Ultimate Meatless Burger potentially affected was available for sale as of November 21, 2012, in the following states; NY, CT, PA, FL, IL, MD, IN, WI, VA, NJ and DE.  Falafel potentially affected, was available for sale as of November 21, 2012, nationwide. No illnesses have been reported to date.  VEGGIE PATCH discovered this issue as part of its routine testing of its products.

Consumers who purchased any product with the specific use-by dates and UPC codes listed above are asked to dispose of the product. They should email contactus@veggiepatch.com to arrange for a full refund.  The recall affects only these two items. Products that do not contain the specific use-by dates and UPC codes listed are not affected by the recall.  No other VEGGIE PATCH products or other use-by dates of The Ultimate Meatless Burger or Falafel are affected by this recall.  Frozen Veggie Patch products are not affected by this recall.
