USA – Food safety tips for those affected by flooding in California

Food Safety News

An atmospheric river has led to massive flooding in California, and residents now brace for more dangerous storms with the arrival of a second atmospheric river. Residents impacted by the flooding need to keep food safety in mind.

The narrow and fast-moving corridor of water vapor in the atmosphere is expected to bring intense precipitation. Central and southern California are likely to be hit with vast amounts of rainfall, which could result in flash floods.

Research – Exploring the Link Between Legionnaires’ Disease and Pneumonia

CDC legionella

Most of us have heard of Legionnaires’ disease and we are all likely to be aware of pneumonia too, but did you know there is a link between the two?

There are many illnesses and conditions that can affect the lungs. Legionnaires’ disease presents as a serious type of pneumonia. This is an inflammation of the lungs. Below, we’ll go into more detail about the link between Legionnaires’ disease and pneumonia. Both can be fatal, particularly among those who are more susceptible to this type of infection than others.

A version of this story exploring the link between Legionnaires’ disease and pneumonia appeared in Legionella Control International’s newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free at the link above

Nestlé temporarily suspends output at France factory at centre of deadly E. coli outbreak

Just Food

Nestlé has temporarily suspended production at a frozen-pizza factory in France at the centre of a fatal E. coli outbreak last year due to falling sales.

Production at the Buitoni pizza factory, located in Caudry in northern France, was suspended for nine months last year following an outbreak of E. coli reportedly linked to flour contamination at the site.

Nestlé said the fallout from the closure, coupled with global inflation, has led to a drop in sales of frozen pizzas which made the factory untenable.

All of the factory’s employees will keep their jobs for the time being, despite a complete suspension of production, the company told unions in a meeting yesterday afternoon (2 March).

But the future of the Caudry site, which produces frozen pizzas for its Buitoni brand, has not yet been decided, a spokesperson told Just Food.

Research – Genomic attributes of Vibrio cholerae O1 responsible for 2022 massive cholera outbreak in Bangladesh

Nature.com

In 2022, one of its worst cholera outbreaks began in Bangladesh and the icddr,b Dhaka hospital treated more than 1300 patients and ca. 42,000 diarrheal cases from March-1 to April-10, 20221. Here, we present genomic attributes of V. cholerae O1 responsible for the 2022 Dhaka outbreak and 960 7th pandemic El Tor (7PET) strains from 88 countries. Results show strains isolated during the Dhaka outbreak cluster with 7PET wave-3 global clade strains, but comprise subclade BD-1.2, for which the most recent common ancestor appears to be that responsible for recent endemic cholera in India. BD-1.2 strains are present in Bangladesh since 2016, but not establishing dominance over BD-2 lineage strains2 until 2018 and predominantly associated with endemic cholera. In conclusion, the recent shift in lineage and genetic attributes, including serotype switching of BD-1.2 from Ogawa to Inaba, may explain the increasing number of cholera cases in Bangladesh.

Scotland -Gastrointestinal & Zoonoses Biennial Report 2020/2021

PHS

This report presents provisional information on laboratory reports of gastrointestinal and zoonotic pathogens in Scotland up to the end of 2021. In previous years, PHS produced separate annual reports for each organism.
This year, we have integrated these separate reports into a single document. Routine reporting was suspended during the pandemic due to significant service disruption, as almost all resources were redirected to the response. This report represents the return of annual Gastrointestinal and Zoonotic (GIZ) reporting and includes the first presentation of data from the period of suspended reporting. This report is also the first annual GIZ report published by Public Health Scotland (PHS) since it was established in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This report provides an overview of data trends and presents data observed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when strict non-pharmaceutical interventions were in place. Such interventions affected not only the epidemiology of COVID-19, but also that of other pathogens, including GIZ. Data presented in this report are based on laboratory confirmed reports from clinical diagnosticand reference laboratories in Scotland which are provided to PHS via Electronic Communication of Surveillance in Scotland (ECOSS). ECOSS is a national tool for monitoring organisms, infections and microbial intoxications that are of clinical or public health importance.
Most samples are taken for clinical reasons and are not designed to inform surveillance. Data arising from these results represents therefore only a proportion of the true underlying infection burden and may be biased towards certain groups who are more likely to be tested such as the very young and the old, or those who have travelled. Different pathogens may be subject to different biases. Because of these inevitable limitations, interpretation of surveillance data can be difficult. The laboratory reports arise from samples from both community and healthcare settings.
Laboratory reports represent a small proportion of the true incidence in the population. The second study of infectious intestinal disease in the community (IID 2 study) estimated the overall rate of IID in the UK in 2009 to determine the extent of under-reporting.

The extent of underreporting may have been exacerbated during 2020 and 2021 due to restrictions in place, and changes in healthcare seeking behaviours. This underrepresentation is also recognised to apply to many other pathogens, including non-foodborne zoonoses. In summary, unprecedented behavioural changes during the pandemic such as travel, diet and time spent outside will have impacted on the epidemiology of many GIZ pathogens. In addition, changes in healthcare seeking behaviour during the same time frame will have affected diagnosis of disease arising from these pathogens. Therefore, interpretation of the data must be heavily caveated with the uncertainty that arises from these factors.Any changes in data previously published are a result of PHS data validation.
