Canada – Salmonella outbreak sickens dozens in Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reports investigating an outbreak of Salmonella infections infections involving Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia.
As of February 18, 2021, there have been 57 laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis illness investigated in the following provinces: Newfoundland and Labrador (25), and Nova Scotia (32). Individuals became sick between late October 2020 and late January 2021. Nineteen individuals have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Based on the investigation findings to date, exposure to eggs has been identified as a likely source of the outbreak. Many of the individuals who became sick reported consuming, preparing, cooking and baking at home with eggs. Some individuals reported exposure to eggs at an institution (including nursing homes and hospitals) where they resided or worked before becoming ill.

Research – Experts examine reasons for different Salmonella results
Wageningen University scientists have looked at why there are discrepancies in Salmonella results between poultry farmers’ and authorities’ tests.
Experts analyzed factors associated with the difference between positive tests from routine initial Salmonella monitoring by poultry farmers and negative results of a retest by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). Retests are based on suspicions of a false positive result from routine monitoring.
The work, commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), gave an insight into results during Salmonella surveillance of Dutch adult breeding flocks.
Researchers said there is good reason to make retesting of initial positive results from routine Salmonella monitoring again possible in the EU. This would only involve 10 to 15 cases per year in the Netherlands. The country had to change its approach in early 2020 because of pressure from the European Commission for retests only if there is “reasonable doubt” about a first result.

Finland – Three brands recall eggs over Salmonella risk
Eggs branded as Kieku, Kesko’s Pirkka brand and Kotimaista by S-Grouphave been pulled from shelves.
Packs of ten free range Kotimaista eggs are part of the recall, as are ten-egg and six-egg packs of free range Pirkka eggs.
Kieku has also added its Kieku-branded four-egg packs to the recall. All the eggs are from a farm where salmonella was found in samples, and were packed at a Kieku plant.
The risk of salmonella contamination only affects eggs with the production code 2FI15464. More details on the recall, and pictures of the recalled products, are available on the Kieku website.

Research – Pulsed ultraviolet light technology to improve egg safety, help poultry industry
Pulsed ultraviolet light can be an effective alternative to some of the antimicrobial technologies now used by the poultry industry to kill pathogens on eggshells, according to Penn State researchers, who simulated production conditions to test the technology.
Researcher Paul Patterson, professor of poultry science, College of Agricultural Sciences, suggests the technology has merit for commercial application in the egg industry.
“This study is unique because it scaled-up and applied components of standard egg processing to a conveyor and sanitizing eggs in a commercial setting,” he said. “In the absence of water or other chemical sanitizers, this technology has the potential to achieve significant — equal or greater — microbial reductions than some currently available technologies.”
Every year in the United States, an average of 287 eggs are consumed per person, and more than 14.1 billion eggs are set in hatchery incubators to produce chicks destined for the egg and meat bird industries. By reducing the microbial load on eggs, foodborne illness outbreaks associated with eggs and poultry meat can be reduced while chick health is maintained.

Australia – Australian egg industry cracks down on Salmonella
The Australian egg industry has continued to work closely with authorities to respond to and eliminate the threat of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) since its initial outbreak in September 2018.
Additional legislation was introduced in New South Wales in the form of a Biosecurity (Salmonella Enteritidis) Control Order to manage the risk of SE to consumers. It has been in effect since August 2019.
In its 2019–20 Annual Report, NSW Food Authority reported a reduction in compliance of the food safety program across the NSW egg industry as a result of increased regulatory controls placed on industry due to the introduction of the Biosecurity (Salmonella Enteritidis) Control Order.
Lithuania – Lithuania orders destruction of eggs contaminated by Salmonella
Lithuanian authorities have ordered the destruction of some eggs from Ukraine because of the detection of Salmonella.
The State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) prohibited the sale of medium sized white eggs in packs of 10 with a shelf life until Dec. 26, 2020. More than 38,000 cartons of eggs were affected.
An investigation into the marketing of potentially unsafe products was started after a notification on the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) and based on information from the retailer Lidl Lietuva.
