USA – Outbreak Investigation of E. coli O121:H19: Organic Carrots (November 2024)

On November 16, 2024, Grimmway Farms initiated a voluntary recall of multiple quantities and brands of bagged, organic whole and baby carrots and contacted their distributing customers. Recalled products were shipped directly to retail distribution centers nationwide in the United States and Puerto Rico. These products should no longer be in grocery stores but may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.

On November 21, 2024, the recall expanded to include additional bag sizes for organic whole carrots under the following labels:

  • Bunny Luv: 50-lb
  • Cal-Organic: 15-lb and 50-lb
  • Good & Gather: 1-lb

A full list of recalled products is below. These products are likely no longer available for sale in stores but could be in people’s homes.

FDA’s investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Reason For Issuing Alert The CFS noted a notification from the Food and Drug Administration of the USA that the above-mentioned product is being recalled in the USA due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O121.
Action Taken by the Centre for Food Safety Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the local importers for follow-up. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected product concerned.

As a precautionary measure, the importer concerned has stopped selling and removed from shelves the affected product upon the CFS’s instructions and has initiated a recall.

The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and continue to follow up and take appropriate action. An investigation is ongoing.

Advice to the Trade The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.
Advice to Consumers Not to consume the affected product if they have bought any.

Belgium – “Cheese” Petit Mont D’Or and cheese fondue from the Cru brand – Yersinia enterocolitica

Petit Mont D'Or - Cheese Fondue - Raw

Cru is reminiscent of Petit Mont D’Or cheeses and Cru brand cheese fondue.

In agreement with the AFSCA, Cru is withdrawing (as a precautionary measure) Petit Mont D’Or cheeses and Cru brand cheese fondue from sale due to possible contamination by Yersinia enterocolitica.

In the meantime, the affected products have been removed from the shelves of all stores. Customers who have purchased this product are asked not to consume it and to return it to the store. There, they will receive a refund of the purchase amount.

Possible symptoms of Yersinia enterocolitica infection include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These symptoms usually occur 2 to 7 days after consumption.

Customers who have eaten the affected product and are experiencing these symptoms are advised to consult their doctor and report that they have eaten this product.
