Following a notification via the RASFF system (European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed), the AFSCA is withdrawing the product “brown beans” from the MP people’s choice brand due to its high aflatoxin content.

The AFSCA asks that you do not consume this product and return it to the point of sale where it was purchased.

Iceland – Mycotoxins in brown beans

The Swedish Food Agency warns against the consumption of MP-people’s choice brown beans from Ghana, which Fiska.is imports from the UK, due to aflatoxin. The company has, in consultation with the health authorities of Garðabær, Hafnarfjörður, Kópavog, Mosfellsbær and Seltjarnarnes (HEF), recalled the product.

The Swedish Food Agency received information about the product through Europe’s RASFF rapid alert system for food and feed.

The recall only applies to the following production batches:

  • Brand: MP – People’s Choice
  • Product name: Brown beans 910g
  • Manufacturer: MacPhilips Foods Ltd
  • Importer: Lagsmaður ehf / Fiska.is
  • Country of manufacture: Ghana
  • Batch number/best before dates: 30-01-2026
  • Storage conditions: Dry product – at room temperature.
  • Distribution: Fish

Consumers who have purchased the product are advised not to consume it, throw it away or take it to a Fiska.is store for a refund.

Danger  : Too high aflatoxin content

Aflatoxins are mycotoxins produced by certain species of  Aspergillus moulds  that thrive when the temperature and humidity of the food are high. Aflatoxins are considered genotoxic and carcinogenic by the European Food Safety Authority and can be dangerous at high and repeated consumption.

The product can be distributed by different points of sale in Luxembourg.
