India – 50 Students Suffer Food Poisoning Following Dinner At Girls’ Hostel In Koraput

Koraput: Around 50 hostel borders of Kasturba Gandhi Girls Hostel in Lamtaput area of Odisha’s Koraput district became sick after having dinner on Sunday night.

According to sources, these girl students developed symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and stomachache after having their dinner at the hostel at around 9 pm.

After receiving information, a team of five doctors from the Lamtaput Community Health Center (CHC) rushed to the hostel to treat the ailing students. Later on, the students suffering from food poisoning were admitted to the Lamtaput CHC.

It is alleged that poor quality of food led to their food poisoning.

According to sources, as many as 20 female stu­dents fell ill after eating Samosa and Pakora from nearby shop and they had been shifted to the hospi­tal where their condition was stable.

USA – California health officials issue public warning about Shemshad products because of botulism risk

The California Department of Public Health is warning consumers not to eat Shemshad’s Mulberry Molasses and Mulberry Jam jarred food products because they were produced outside of the health department’s Cannery Program oversight, making them susceptible to contamination with Clostridium botulinum.

Ingestion of botulism toxin from improperly processed jarred and canned foods may lead to serious illness and death.

There is concern that consumers may have the products in their homes because of their long shelf life.

Consumers that observe the product being offered for sale are encouraged to report the activity to the CDPH toll-free complaint line at 800-495-3232.

Because food poisoning and the stomach flu can present with similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell them apart.

“While the symptoms of food poisoning and stomach bugs overlap, there is a difference in how quickly the symptoms arise,” Dr. Jackson says. “With food poisoning, rapid diarrhea and vomiting will begin within three to six hours of eating a contaminated food source. With a stomach flu, it’s a slower course, and the symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea may not show up for 12 to 24 hours. A person will start feeling unwell and queasy first.”

In a case of food poisoning, at least 80 persons were hospitalised as they fell ill after eating food served during a wedding ceremony at a resort on the outskirts of Nagpur city in Maharashtra, police said today.

The incident took place on December 10, following which the businessman father of the bridegroom lodged a complaint against the resort management alleging that the food served during the function was stale and emitted a foul smell, the police said.
