France – Emergency Serious food poisoning: 10 cases of botulism, including 8 hospitalized and 1 death, linked to visiting a restaurant in Bordeaux

The health authorities, in conjunction with Public Health France and the National Reference Center for Botulism (Institut Pasteur) recommend that people who have visited the Bordeaux establishment Tchin Tchin Wine Bar (3 Rue Emile Duployé, 33000 Bordeaux) between Monday 4 and Sunday September 10, 2023 to consult a doctor urgently or to contact the 15th, mentioning cases of botulism, in the event of symptoms appearing after this attendance.

The people concerned all frequented the same restaurant-bar in Bordeaux, the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar, over the last week. The suspected foods are at this stage canned sardines in oil homemade by the restaurateur and served between September 4 and 10, 2023 in this Bordeaux restaurant. 

Botulism is a serious disease (fatal in 5 to 10% of cases) whose incubation time can range from a few hours to a few days. 
Symptoms include, to varying degrees: early digestive signs which may be fleeting (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea), eye damage (failure to accommodate, blurred or double vision), dry mouth accompanied by a lack of swallowing or even speech, or neurological symptoms (wrong paths, more or less severe paralysis of the muscles). There is usually no fever.

What are the possible sources of contamination?

Botulism is a serious neurological condition caused by a very potent toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It develops particularly in poorly preserved foods. In France, the majority of cases of botulism correspond to food poisoning, by ingestion of the toxin produced by C. botulinum in preserved foods that have not undergone an extensive sterilization process: cured meats, cold meats or even family-made preserves. or artisanal.

India – Madhya Pradesh: 22 Hostel Students Fall Ill Due To Food Poisoning In Alirajpur

Alirajpur (Madhya Pradesh): A total of 22 students staying at a hostel in Badi Hirapur village under Jobat tehsil have fallen sick due to food poisoning after having dinner, police said on Saturday.

The students had developed stomach aches and vomiting on Saturday. They were rushed to the district hospital at night and given primary treatment. Relatives of the students had gathered outside the hospital where they had been admitted.

A team of officials have been sent to the hostel to check the water source, quality of food supplied, the area where food is stored and prepared, to ensure that cleanliness and hygiene are maintained in the hostel campus.

The collector has suspended hostel superintendent Karam Singh Rawat for negligence and lack of supervision.

Norway has two sick in Spanish botulism outbreak

Norway has reported two cases that are part of a botulism outbreak in Spain, bringing the number of people affected to 11.

There is a link between patients and different packaged brands of Spanish omelet (tortilla de patata), which is made with potatoes and eggs, purchased in various supermarkets in different regions.

The Norwegian cases stayed in Barcelona between July 10 and 23.

Hong Kong – Dozens of kids taken to hospital with food poisoning

Forty-four young people were taken to hospital on Monday following a suspected food poisoning outbreak at a Jockey Club camp in Tai Po.

An organiser said the group, aged 11 to 18, were suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting.

The children had been camping at the Hong Kong Award for Young People Jockey Club Duke of Edinburgh Training Camp in Lam Tsuen since Saturday, the organiser said.

Malta – Authorities probe reports of food poisoning following Kalkara wedding

The health authorities are investigating reports of people suffering from gastroenteritis following a wedding reception in Kalkara on Thursday, with at least one person hospitalised.

The Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Unit has asked attendees at the wedding reception at Villa Bighi to fill in an online form indicating whether they had fallen ill, what kind of symptoms they had, and when.

Attendees were also asked whether they had any complaints about the food served at the event because it may have tasted bad or was not warm enough, among other reasons.

Food caterer fined $4,800 for hygiene lapses after 345 suffer food poisoning in Nov 2022

SINGAPORE – Catering firm Rasel Catering Singapore was fined $4,800 on Wednesday for multiple hygiene lapses under the Environmental Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

In November 2022, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and SFA received reports of gastroenteritis involving 345 people after they ate food prepared by Rasel. Gastroenteritis symptoms include diarrhoea and vomiting.

During their inspection of Rasel’s premises, MOH and SFA found several hygiene lapses, including cockroach infestations, usage of a dirty food container and pathogens in ready-to-eat food items.

The Palacios Alimentación Business Group has issued a statement in which it informs of the voluntary withdrawal, as a precaution, from the shelves of the points of sale of the fresh packaged potato tortilla produced in the Mudrian factory, and of the temporary stoppage of its manufacture.

Although up to now it has not been possible to establish evidence, neither in the products nor in the processes, that relates cause and effect, the Palacios group asks all those people who have purchased any of these products (Palacios, Chef Select, Auchan, Eroski, Unide, Consum, DIA, the potato tortilla with onion ESSENTIALS 600 g. from Ametller (see statement from Ametller Origin), Condis, El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Alipende, IFA i Rikissimo Group) refrain from consuming it and proceed to return it at the point of sale.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has transferred this information to the autonomous communities and cities, through the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (SCIRI) in order to verify the withdrawal of affected products from marketing channels.
