Australia – Cheese Recall – Listeria monocytogenes

Ashgrove Cheese Pty Ltd has recalled 3 cheese products (Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm Cheese Wine Lovers selection, Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm Cheese Picnic Pack and Aldi Emporium Selection Pepper Cheese) due to Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria
may cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the
elderly and people with low immune systems. The Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm Cheese products were sold in independent supermarkets in TAS and VIC and the Emporium Selection Pepper Cheese sold in Aldi stores in QLD, NSW, ACT and VIC. Consumers should not eat these products and should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.

Research – Freshwater Turtles and Salmonella – Campylobacter

Professors from the University CEU Cardenal Herrera studied 200 specimens of freshwater turtles from eleven Valencian wetland areas, to determine the prevalence of Salmonella and Campylobacter in these animals, because of their potential risk of transmitting gastrointestinal diseases to humans, especially children. According to the results, published in the journal Plos One, 11% of the analysed specimens of freshwater turtles were found positive for Salmonella. However, Campylobacter was not detected in any of them. This is the first study to rule out terrapins as transmitters of campylobacteriosis to humans.

USA – FDA Recall – Cheeses – Salmonella

December 24, 2013 – Flat Creek Farm & Dairy of Swainsboro, GA has recalled 90 pounds of Heavenly Blue and 78 pounds of Aztec Cheddar cheese, because of potential contamination of Salmonella. Flat Creek is in the process of notifying all of the purchasers.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The cheeses were distributed in certain parts of Georgia and Florida and (6) online orders (www.flatcreekdairy.com), which are in the process of being notified. The product is packed in clear plastic and ranges in sizes from ½ pound to whole wheels. The recall is specific to product marked with the lot codes 130916XHB (Heavenly Blue) and 130823XAZ (Aztec Cheddar), which can be found on the front of the package.

The recall was the result of a routine sampling program conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which revealed that the finished products were potentially contaminated.

AUSTRIA – Lidl Austria is recalling Duck with orange apple filling, 2000g (Ente mit Orangen-Apfelfüllung, 2000g) because some of the batches may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella, the name of a group of bacteria, is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. Usually, symptoms last 4-7 days and most people get better without treatment. But, Salmonella can cause more serious illness in older adults, infants, and persons with chronic diseases. Salmonella is killed by cooking and pasteurization.

The product recalled is Duck with orange apple filling, 2000g (Ente mit Orangen-Apfelfüllung, 2000g) which was manufactured by SK- Meat Vertriebs GmbH , D- 49685 Emstek.

Australia – Salmonella Outbreak Closes Restaurant in Melbourne

MORE than a dozen people have fallen ill after eating from a Melbourne restaurant that has been shut down after a salmonella scare.

The Hao Phong restaurant in Footscray was closed by health authorities on Tuesday after two diners were taken to hospital for salmonella poisoning, a Victorian health department spokesman said.

The Maribyrnong City Council confirmed a number of people had fallen ill after eating at the restaurant between December 27 and 31.

There are up to 13 suspected cases involving people who ate at the restaurant, the council confirmed.
