The presence of Salmonella in sprouted alfalfa sprouts of the TUGAS brand from Spain is reported.

The data of the product involved are:

According to the information available, the products have been distributed in the autonomous communities of Catalonia , Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community, La Rioja and Madrid, and it cannot be ruled out that there may be redistribution to other autonomous communities.

In relation to the information received by the health authorities of La Rioja, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition has communicated this information to the competent authorities of the autonomous communities, through the  European Food Alert Network .

The withdrawal of the affected product from the marketing channels is being monitored by the competent authorities.

As a precautionary measure,  people who may have the above-mentioned product in their homes are advised to refrain from consuming it.

Nature Of Danger:

People infected with Salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between 6 and 72 hours.  The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody.  Other symptoms may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps.  The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
