USA – Two Pet Food Recalls – Aflatoxin – Salmonella

Food Poisoning Bulletin

Hy-Vee, Inc. is recalling certain bags of dog food due to elevated levels of aflatoxin, a chemical contaminant found in corn. Consumers who have purchased these products should not feed them to their dogs.

Aflatoxins cause cancer in animals, but are allowed at extremely low levels in nuts, seeds and legumes because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers them “unavoidable contaminants” that pose little risk if small amounts are eaten over a lifetime. The problem with the dog food products was discovered by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. At the time if the recall no illnesses had been reported in association with the recall.

Food Poisoning Bulletin

Honest Kitchen today is recalling five lots of its Verve, Zeal and Thrive pet food products for possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled products were produced between August and November 2012 and sold nationwide in the U.S. and Canada in retail stores, online and through mail order.

Pets who have Salmonella infections may have symptoms including lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some may only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pets have consumed the recalled product and have these symptoms,  contact your veterinarian.

USA – Alaskan Raw Milk Outbreak Expands – Campylobacter

Alaskan Government

Campylobacter Outbreak Associated with Consumption of Raw Milk Kenai Peninsula, January – February 2013

The purpose of this Health Advisory is to inform you of a recent and potentially ongoing outbreak of Campylobacter infections that have been associated with consuming raw milk.

What is the outbreak?

Campylobacter infection is reportable by state regulations to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services’ Section of Epidemiology (SOE). Since late January, 2013, four people with confirmed Campylobacterinfection and at least one person with probable infection reported consuming raw (unpasteurized) milk in the few days preceding illness. One infant with close contact to a confirmed case-patient is also suspected of having Campylobacter infection. All six reside on the Kenai Peninsula. The Campylobacter isolated from the four lab-confirmed cases are a match by molecular techniques (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, or PFGE). This strain of Campylobacter has not been previously identified in Alaska.

What is Campylobacter and how do people become infected?

Campylobacter are bacteria that can cause diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramping/pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever within 2 to 5 days after exposure. The illness typically lasts from several days to over a week, with variable severity. Some people, especially young children or individuals with compromised immune systems, can develop severe or even life-threatening illness. Infrequently, Campylobacter infection leads to long-term consequences. Some people with Campylobacter infection develop arthritis, and rarely, some develop a life-threatening disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome that inflames the nerves of the body beginning several weeks after the onset of diarrhea.

Outbreaks of Campylobacter are often associated with consumption of unpasteurized milk —one such outbreak, traced to a Mat-Su Valley farm, resulted in 18 illnesses in Alaska in 2011. Other sources ofCampylobacter infection include consumption of undercooked meat, consumption of food or water cross-contaminated by raw meat, or contact with feces from infected animals. Human to human transmission can also occur.

Play the Game – CDC iPAD Outbreak Detective

CDC iPad-STO-sm

Scientists and gamers alike can now play disease detective,  through “Solve the Outbreak,” a new iPad app from the Centers for Disease  Control and Prevention. The app lets users assume the role of a disease  outbreak investigator in the agency’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) by  navigating three fictional outbreaks based on real-life events. Users get  clues, review data, and make decisions to determine the cause of the outbreak.

“The goal is to use new technology to  provide an  engaging, interactive way for users to learn how CDC solves outbreaks, thereby  increasing general knowledge about real-life public health issues,” said CDC  Director Dr. Tom Frieden. “This application allows us to illustrate the  challenges of solving outbreaks and how our disease detectives work on the  front lines to save lives and protect people 24/7.”

In the game, participants also become familiar with health  tips, definitions and information about epidemiology, which is a science used to investigate outbreaks and to  monitor patterns, causes and effects of diseases on the public. Users  advance in rank as they earn points and can post their results on Facebook and  Twitter to challenge other participants.

“This is a great learning tool for science teachers, teens,  young adults, public health enthusiasts and mystery lovers,” said Carol  Crawford, branch chief, CDC’s Electronic Media Branch.  “The three  introductory scenarios are based on actual events EIS officers have  solved.  We also plan to add new outbreak cases.”
