The Cumberland County Department of Public Health in North Carolina has announced a Salmonella outbreak among staff and patrons of the Holiday Inn Bordeaux in Fayetteville. The hotel has two restaurants: the All American Sports Bar and Grill and the Cafe Bordeaux. The facility also has a banquet kitchen.

Cumberland County Health Department Director Buck Wilson said, “we are actively working with the hotel and restaurant management and with state officials to resolve this as soon as possible.” The management of the hotel is fully cooperating with local and state authorities.

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating a Salmonella outbreak associated with Firefly Tapas Restaurant and Bar at 3900 Paradise Road in Las Vegas. Public health officials believe more than 80 people have been sickened in this outbreak. The health department closed Firefly on April 26, 2013 after reports of illness began coming into the office.

The health department has identified the cause of the outbreak as Salmonella. The symptoms of salmonellosis, the illness associated with a Salmonella infection, include diarrhea, which can be bloody, fever, abdominal cramps, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. People usually get sick 6 to 72 hours after infection. Investigators do not know what food is the source of the outbreak.

The short self-assessment — found at www.SalmonellaRisk.com/Assessment — helps producers find proactive measures to help lessen the risk of a disastrous outbreak.

Salmonella is on the rise and is a risk to every dairy operation,” says Dr. Gary  Neubauer, senior manager, Dairy  Technical Services, Pfizer Animal Health. “Dairies are operating at a  faster pace than ever before with cattle, feed and people going on and  off the farm every day. It’s important for producers to consider how  much risk they are willing to take on.”

While taking the assessment, producers answer questions about on-farm hygiene, accessibility and animal health practices.  Once completed, the tool provides a personalized Salmonella reduction plan that can be printed or emailed to the herd veterinarian.  Together, producers and veterinarians can use this plan to review  current protocols and management practices, and establish  ways to help reduce risk and build immunity to Salm

USA – Sunland Peanut Butter – FDA Suggestions the Company Knew About the Salmonella

The food world is still reeling from the salmonella outbreak that sickened at least 41 people across 20 states, which was linked to Sunland peanuts that were sold as peanut butter at Trader Joe’s and several other supermarket chains. Now, information released late last month by the FDA suggests that Sunland knowingly sold potentially contaminated products going back to 2009 [pdf].

Sushi is the likely source of a Salmonella outbreak, with spicy tuna roll sushi closely associated with Salmonella illnesses.

A Salmonella serotype Bareilly outbreak has caused at least 90 cases of Salmonella in residents of 19 states and the District of Columbia.  At least 7 people have been hospitalised.

A total of 14 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O26 have been reported from 6 states. The two new cases have been reported from Michigan. Both new cases reported eating at Jimmy John’s restaurants and consuming sprouts in the 7 days preceding illness.

Hamilton Public Health officials have discovered another 12 cases of salmonella illnesses after asking anyone who has eaten at Eat a Pita on Main Street East since Feb. 1 to call them.

Officials declared a salmonella outbreak connected to Eat a Pita after investigating four salmonella cases linked to the restaurant. Eat a Pita has been closed as a result of improper food handling. During a previously scheduled health inspection on Feb. 1, it was found that cooked chicken wasn’t being kept at a high enough temperature.
