Investigated Illnesses and Outbreaks Table Update for Seafood Related Natural Toxin and Scombrotoxin Fish Poisoning

Table 1: Closed Illness and Outbreak Incidents is a list of investigations that were managed by FDA’s Seafood-Related Natural Toxin and Scombrotoxin Fish Poisoning Team for Fish Other Than Molluscan Shellfish. The listed incidents have been completed at this time.

The table is managed and updated when a significant number of illnesses have been investigated in a specific period of time or at least quarterly.

The table has been updated to illustrate additional information such as

  • Pending analytical results;
  • Confirmed fish/fishery product species identifications; and
  • Completed analytical results are listed in their own column.

The following FDA tracking numbers, and illness type have been added to the table:

India – 43 Kerala Hotels Shut After 100 Fall Sick Due To Suspected Food Poisoning

The Food Safety Department of Kerala government has conducted an inspection in 429 establishments across the state and shut down 43 hotels following the death of a woman in a suspected food poisoning incident at a religious event.

The inspections on Tuesday came in the backdrop of the death of a young woman in Kottayam after allegedly having food from a hotel.

The state health ministry said that among the 43 establishments, 21 were found out to be without a licence.

Apart from this, 22 establishments which were lacking cleanness have also been suspended from carrying on with their business.

Notices were issued to 138 institutions and 44 food samples have been sent for testing.

The ministry also stated that inspections would be continued intensively across the state.

On Sunday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George ordered the probe into a suspected food poisoning incident in which over 100 people fell ill. The incident occurred in the Keezvaipur area of the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.

The affected people have been admitted to various hospitals in the district where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Algeria – Food poisoning leaves one dead, 144 injured in Algeria

A woman died and 144 people were injured after suffering food poisoning in Algeria earlier this week.

According to local reports, people have eaten sweets that are unfit for human consumption in the city of Magra, east of the country.

North Korea – Pyongyang food poisoning outbreak likely caused by government distributed dairy products

A rash of food poisoning cases was recently reported in Pyongyang by families who had consumed the dairy products that the North Korean government distributes to children under the age of five years old, Daily NK has learned.

A source in Pyongyang told Daily NK on Tuesday that around a dozen parents and children under the age of five in the Taesong District of Pyongyang were taken to the hospital after reporting symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting.

An investigation found that everyone in the group began to experience symptoms after consuming dairy products supplied by their neighborhood government office.

Children in North Korea are given dairy products, including powdered milk and fresh milk, as one of the North Korean government’s flagship childcare initiatives. North Korea is currently combating an extremely low birth rate.

India – Food poisoning: 40 girl students taken ill in Julurpad

Kothagudem: Nearly 40 students of the Government Residential Girls School at Padamata Narasapuram in Julurpad mandal fell ill after taking food that was not cooked properly.

About 29 girls complained of stomach ache, vomiting and motions on Monday night. The school staff took them to the PHC in Julurpad. Even as they were under treatment, another 11 were brought to the PHC with the same complaint.

P. Nandita, of Class VIII, said she consumed rice that was not boiled well. “We faced an unbearable stomach ache followed by vomiting,” she said, Madhu Sri, another student, said, “I had loose motion in the morning and we are fine after taking the medicines.”

Israel – 36 sheltered housing residents contract food poisoning – Ministry of Health

Australia – Suspected mass food poisoning at Aboriginal languages conference

A gathering of Aboriginal language educators on the Central Coast has ended with a number of attendees hospitalised after a case of suspected food poisoning at their hotel.

Participants of the Aboriginal Languages Trust conference attended a gala dinner last Wednesday at the restaurant of the Crowne Plaza Terrigal.

Gamilaraay Yuwaalaraay man Ted Fields told NITV his partner Michelle O’Leary became violently ill just 20 minutes after dinner.
 
The number of attendees taken ill is unconfirmed but some people on social media have said there had been dozens of cases.

Speaking to NITV from Gosford Hospital, where he is still a patient, Mr Fields, 51, said he witnessed multiple attendees being admitted.
 
In a statement to NITV, NSW Health confirmed an investigation into the incident is underway.

“Aboriginal Languages Trust is aware of a number of cases of a gastro-like illness in people who attended a two-day conference held at a Terrigal venue on Wednesday.

“NSW Health is urgently investigating the situation to identify the cause of illness, in collaboration with the NSW Food Authority.”

India – Several fall ill after eating food at wedding ceremony in MP’s Dhar; 20 hospitalised

DHAR: In a case of suspected food poisoning, several people took ill after having a meal at a wedding ceremony in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh and at least 20 of them have been admitted to a local hospital, an official said on Saturday.

“After having food at a wedding ceremony at Dhamnod in Dhar on Friday night, several people complained of vomiting,” Block Medical Officer Bramharaj Kaushal said.

“Twenty of them were admitted to the local health centre, while others were discharged after initial treatment. It is a case of food poisoning,” he said.

All are out of danger and undergoing treatment, Kaushal said.

India – 80 girls hospitalised due to food poisoning in Singanamala

Singanamala: About 80 girl students of Singanamala Kasturba government residential school fell sick and complained of stomach pain, vomiting and dycentry after consuming puffed rice (maramaralu) and drinking boost on Friday evening. The incident came to light late night on Friday. The students were rushed to local government hospital for treatment. However, 30 of the 50 students were referred to Government headquarters hospital for better treatment.
