Taipai Costco Recall (Foppen) Salmon – Salmonella

TAIPEI–Costco Wholesale Corp. has pulled all smoked salmon processed by Dutch company Foppen from its chain stores in Taiwan, following foreign news reports stating salmonella-tainted smoked salmon supplied by Foppen has sickened hundreds of people in the United States and Holland, a health official said yesterday.

The smoked salmon in question is imported under the name of Costco’s store brand Kirkland, but has been processed by Foppen, said Tsai Shu-chen, division head of the Food and Drug Administration under the Cabinet-level Department of Health.

Xan Confections is recalling 13 of its gourmet peanut butter chocolate products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The products were made with Sunland ingredients, which have been recalled and linked to a Salmonella Bredeney outbreak in the U.S.

Late July Snacks, LLC, is recalling Organic Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers becasue they were made with Sunland peanut butter, which has been recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. One of Sunland’s products, Trader Joe’s Valencia Peanut Butter, has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney in the United States that has sickened at least 30 people.

Dutch US Smoked Salmon – Salmonella Hundreds Sick

Scores of people in the Netherlands and the US have caught salmonella after eating Dutch smoked salmon, say Dutch health authorities.

About 200 people have fallen ill in the Netherlands along with about 100 people in the US, said the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM).

Smoked salmon tainted with salmonella bacteria has sickened hundreds of people in the Netherlands and the U.S., sparking a major recall, health authorities said Tuesday.

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said the salmon has been traced to Dutch company Foppen, which sells fish to many major Dutch supermarkets and to stores around the world, including the U.S.

The institute said in a statement that around 200 people — and likely more — in the Netherlands and more than 100 people in the U.S. have been sickened

More Mango Products Recalled – Salmonella

Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A.  recalled some of its fresh-cut fruit packages containing mangoes from Mexico’s Agricola Daniella because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
 
Dell Monte said its recalled was associated with Coast Distributors Inc., one of four importers supplying the Mexican grown Agricola Daniella brand mangoes to customers in the U.S.
 
Del Monte in turn distributed the recalled mangoes to retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee.  
 
The recalled fresh cut fruit packages are in clear plastic bowls.  
 
Splendid Products of Burlingame, CA first recalled Daniella brand mangoes in the U.S. because they were associated with 25 Salmonella Braenderup illnesses in 25 states.  Three other distributors have now joined the recall.

German Foodborne Virus Outbreak 6,500 Cases

More than 6,500 German children and teenagers have fallen ill with diarrhea and vomiting that health authorities say has likely been caused by a food-borne virus in meals delivered to schools and day care centers.

Regional health ministries and a top health research institute said youngsters from five of Germany’s 16 states had been affected by the acute gastroenteritis, with the first cases registered on Tuesday. So far, those affected had not suffered any complications.

“All the institutions which have registered cases of the illness so far are probably being provided by the same caterer,” wrote the Robert Koch Institute, which researches and advises the German health ministry on infectious diseases. “This suggests that it is an outbreak caused by food.”

The German government and affected states have established a task force charged with looking for the reason for the illness in order to prevent it spreading any further.

Extra Peanut Butter Recalls – Salmonella

Justin’s has announced a recall of some lots of its peanut butters because they were made with Sunland products that have been recalled for Salmonella. Other Justin’s products are not involved in this recall. Fresca Foods in Colorado notified Justin’s that Sunland peanuts were used to make their products in the past, so the company is voluntarily participating in the recall.

Fairytale Brownies is recalling Peanut Butter Sprites and Peanut Butter Cookies because they were made with recalled products from Sunland, Inc. and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were mainly sold through mail order, although some were sold at retail outlets. These products have not been associated with any illnesses, although there is a Salmonella Bredeney outbreak associated with Sunland Products and Trader Joe’s peanut butter that has sickened 30 people in 19 states.

CFIA – Recent E.coli O157 Outbreak Summary

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has completed its in-depth review of the food safety controls at the XL Foods Inc. facility where positive E. coli O157:H7 findings have led to a voluntary recall of more than 250 products. The CFIA continues to identify additional products affected by this recall and conduct effectiveness checks to verify that affected product has been removed from the marketplace.

The in-depth review focused on the plant’s preventative control measures, food-safety policies and procedures, laboratory methodology, and equipment and quality systems.

While the review did not identify one single factor that would lead to E. coli O157:H7 contamination, the combination of several deficiencies could have played a role. By themselves, each of these findings would not typically signal an immediate concern during the course of normal inspection activities.

FDA Reort Multi State Outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in Cheese

The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local public health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to imported Marte brand Frescolina Ricotta Salata cheese distributed by Forever Cheese Inc. of Long Island City, New York. 

Forever Cheese has initiated a voluntary recall of this cheese which may be identified with a lot number (T9425) and/ or a production code (441202).
 

The FDA has placed the maker of the recalled cheese,Fattorie Chiarappa S.R.L.of Conversano, Italy, on Import Alert1. This means that Fattorie Chiarappa cheese will be denied admission into the United States unless the importer shows that the cheese is not contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, such as by using private laboratories to test the cheese.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a total of 14 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes from 11 states and the District of Columbia. Nationwide, 14 persons have been hospitalized. Three deaths have been reported. The CDC2 says that listeriosis contributed to at least one of those deaths. 

 The investigation into this outbreak continues, in order to determine whether there are other possible sources of the outbreak.

UAE – One Death Food Poisoning

A Pakistani man died and 15 people, including 10 children, were hospitalised due to food poisoning in two difference cases.

The condition of the victims who were rushed to Al Qasimi and Al Kuwaiti hospitals have been described to be between serious and minor. The victims ate food from two different places, including an Asian traditional food joint and a fast food outlet at one of the shopping centres in Sharjah.

Dr Yousif Al Serkal, Director of Al Kuwaiti Hospital, said four patients with suspected food poisoning were received at the emergency room of the hospital and were provided necessary treatment. But, despite the efforts of the medical staff, one of the patients, aged 40, died. The other three are still receiving treatment at the hospital and their condition are stable.

The ages of the patients range between 40 and 55 years and all are from Pakistan. The hospital management notified the authorities concerned, including the police and the municipality, for action against the Asian food outlet.

In the second incident, Dr Khalid Khalfan bin Sabt, Deputy Technical Director of Al Qasimi Hospital, said the hospital received 12 food poisoning cases on Friday, including 10 children of ages ranging from five to 13 years, and two men — a 38-year-old Arab and a 30-year-old Asian.

They ate at a fast food joint in one of the shopping centres. Six patients were discharged after they received necessary treatment and six are under medical supervision, but their condition is not critical except that of a little child who is five years old.

Officials at the municipality said inspectors were sent to the particular restaurant and food samples have been collected and are being analysed at the central food laboratory.
