USA – Petting Zoo – Another E.coli O157 Outbreak

Food Poisoning Bulletin 

An E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak linked to the Willow Grove Gardens Pumpkin Patch and petting zoo has been announced by the Cowlitz County Health & Human Services Department of Washington. Public health officials have confirmed one child is ill with the bacterial infection, and there is one probable case. One of the children was hospitalized for several days but is now recovering. Public health officials are asking that anyone who visited the facility and has symptoms of E. coli food poisoning such as diarrhea, which may be bloody, severe stomach cramps, vomiting, or a mild fever, contact them immediately at 360-414-5599.

CFIA – Recall Romaine Lettuce – Listeria monocytogenes

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce described below because this product may be contaminated with E. coliO157:H7 bacteria.

The affected product, Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce, produce of USA, is sold in a plastic package containing 1 head of lettuce. The package bears the UPC 0 27918?ى The affected product was sold at retail from August 8, 2012 through August 17, 2012.

This product has been distributed in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut and Yukon.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

US – Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Salmonella Recall

As a precautionary measure, Banner Mountain Sprouts is voluntarily recalling organic sprouts under the following names: 4oz. zesty greens, 5oz. sprout salad, 4oz. clover, 2lb. clover, 4oz. alfalfa/broccoli, 4oz. alfalfa sprouts, and 1lb. & 2lb. alfalfa sprouts because they may be contaminated with salmonella. Routine testing showed signs of salmonella and Banner Mountain Sprouts was notified of possible contamination.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause an acute infection that can have symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Symptoms usually develop within one to four days after eating contaminated food. Most cases resolve without the need for medical attention. However, some individuals develop a serious illness that can lead to hospitalization.

The sprouts were distributed through retail stores and wholesalers in California. The products come in a 4 or 5 oz. clear, plastic, clamshell container and a 1lb. or 2lb. ziplock bag with a sell by date from 6/17/12 to 7/6/12. No illnesses have been associated with any Banner Mountain sprouts.

US – High E.coli Levels-Boil Water Notice- Aberdeen

E.coli levels in the drinking water supply for the city of Aberdeen, SD have reached dangerous levels, prompting city officials to issue a boil water advisory.

Aberdeen residents should not drink tap water without boiling it first. Before it is safe to drink, the water needs to boil for a full minute. “Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice,” the advisory states

CIFA Recalls – Salmonella and Clostridium botulinum

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Pusateri’s Fine Foods is warning the public not to consume certain vacuum packaged fish products, described below, because the products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Toxins produced by this bacteria may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Les Aliments 2000 Inc. are warning the public not to consume Cuisine du Viêt-nam brand Butterfly Knots Honey & Sesame because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected product, Cuisine du Viêt-nam brand Butterfly Knots Honey & Sesame, is sold in 102 g packages bearing UPC 8 59912 00102 1. All lot codes are affected by this alert.

This product has been distributed in Quebec.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Diamond Pet Food – Linked Recalls – Salmonella

Natural Balance Pet Foods announced today that it is issuing a voluntary recall of certain dry pet food formulas manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods at their Gaston, South Carolina facility. 
Although there have been no animal illnesses reported and none of the products included in the recall has tested positive for Salmonella, the company has voluntarily initiated this recall as a precautionary measure.

WellPet LLC announced a voluntary recall of one recipe of Wellness® dry dog food after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonellain Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility.

All Wellness products are tested for Salmonella and all lots tested negative prior to shipping to customers. The company is voluntarily recalling the select products below. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand foods due to the threat of Salmonella.

Diamond Pet Foods today announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.

In April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies and decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.

The company stated: “We have taken corrective actions at our Gaston, S.C., facility and voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets.”
