Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

USA – Grimmway Farms Recalls Organic Whole and Select Organic Baby Carrots That May Be in Consumers’ Homes Due to Potential STEC E. coli Contamination – O121:H19

Grimmway Farms has issued a recall of select organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots that should no longer be in grocery stores but may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.

These products may have been contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121:H19. E. coli O121:H19 is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea conditions, such as a hemolytic uremic syndrome, or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. The incubation period for E. coli O121:H19 in humans can range from 24 hours to as much as ten days. The average incubation period is 3 to 4 days.

Belgium – Different products “SALMON WRAP, SALMON BUN, SALMON TRIANGLE, SALMON FLEECE” from the Nonna brand – Listeria monocytogenes

In agreement with the AFSCA, NONNA is withdrawing the products “WRAP SAUMON, BUN SAUMON, TRIANGLE SAUMON, POLAIRE SAUMON” of the Nonna brand from sale and recalling them from consumers due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Nonna asks its customers not to consume these products and to return them to the point of sale where they were purchased, where they will be refunded.

All products have been withdrawn from sale. However, some of these products were marketed on the Belgian market before the withdrawal measure. Food poisoning caused by salmonella results in gastrointestinal disorders often accompanied by fever within 12 to 72 hours after consuming
the contaminated products. These symptoms may be aggravated in young children, immunocompromised individuals and the elderly.

People who have consumed the products mentioned above and who present these symptoms are invited to consult their doctor and report this consumption.

Why is the product being recalled?

During routine checks of the humus varieties at the Belgian producer, Salmonella was detected in the raw material. There is therefore a risk of the bacteria also being in the finished humus, and thus of infection with Salmonella.

The symptoms of infection with Salmonella are diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, headache and possibly nausea and vomiting. The illness can last from a few days to several weeks.

Why is the product being recalled?

The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes has been detected in the salads. Infection with Listeria bacteria can cause flu-like symptoms, fever and headache and, in rare cases, gastrointestinal problems.
