USA – Utah Hepatitis A – Second Death

The Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD) announced today that two county residents have died due to Utah’s ongoing hepatitis A outbreak. The first death occurred in January but due to other health conditions affecting the individual, officials were waiting on confirmatory tests to declare an official cause of death. The second death occurred in late March.

Norway – Over 20 people affected by outbreak of stomach virus at Hardangervidda – Norovirus?

The Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT) reported on Sunday that cases of a contagious stomach virus have broken out at some cabins at Hardangervidda. A total of 23 people were affected, reported the association

“It’s a hard problem when our people at our cabins get sick. We do our best to take care of them,” said Henning Hoff Wikborg, CEO of DNT Oslo and Omegn in a press release on Sunday.

Those who are ill have been isolated in their own room, and have access to their own toilet, or have been transported and accommodated in hotels, according to Wikborg.

Hordaland Red Cross have taken 15 people from Hardangervidda, and the municipality in Eidfjord fears an outbreak of ‘norovirus’, wrote Bergens Tidende newspaper on Sunday. Symptoms of the stomach virus are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

The Infectious Epidemic Centre in Eidfjord stated that those who are ill can be infectious for up to 48 hours after the last symptoms have disappeared and that those who are ill should not move on to other cabins the first day that they are healthy again.

USA – More kratom capsules recalled for Salmonella amid outbreak

A Texas company is recalling various lots of multiple kratom supplements because samples have tested positive for Salmonella. The recall notice on the FDA’s website does not specify what strain of the pathogen inspectors found, but 87 people in 35 states are infected in an outbreak traced to kratom products.

Other companies have already recalled kratom products because they tested positive for Salmonella. Kratom is a plant consumed for its stimulant effects and as an opioid substitute. Kratom is also known as Thang, Kakuam, Thom, Ketom, and Biak.

In the most recent recall, Nutrizone of Houston, TX, seeks to pull back products sold to consumers in Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Washington, Missouri, Florida, Mississippi, California and Texas.

USA – Nutrizone Recalls Various Lots of Multiple Dietary Supplements Because of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

NutriZone, LLC of Houston, Texas is recalling 4 different dietary supplements because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella, is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

USA – New York raw milk cheese company ordered to stop sales for food safety violations – Listeria monocytogenes

A New York raw milk cheese company whose products were linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono) has been ordered by a federal court not to manufacture its ready-to-eat aged soft, semi-soft and hard cheeses until it complies with food safety regulations.

On March 30, 2018, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York entered a consent decree of permanent injunction against Vulto Creamery LLC (Walton, N.Y.) and its owner and manager Johannes “Jos” H. Vulto. The defendants cannot prepare, process, manufacture, pack and/or hold FDA-regulated food products until they can ensure that L. mono is not present in their facility and their food.

 

Canada – Salmonella Enteritidis Outbreak in Canada Linked to Poultry Updated, Frozen Raw Breaded Chicken Nuggets Suspected

The Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak in Canada that is linked to poultry has been updated to include a product that has been recalled: frozen raw breaded chicken nuggets. That product, Harvest Creek Chicken Nuggets, has been recalled from the marketplace.

Ireland – Woman died from food poisoning due to Salmonella, inquest hears

A woman who contracted food poisoning at a First Communion function died due to salmonella, an inquest heard.

Investigations into the outbreak are continuing, an inquest into the death of 55-year-old mother of one Sandra O’Brien heard.

Mrs O’Brien, from Rivervalley, Swords, Co Dublin died on May 21 last following the consumption of food prepared at O’Dwyers Pub, Strand Road, Portmarnock, Co Dublin.

Turkey -112 university students in Bursa hospitalised amid food poisoning suspicion

A total of 112 university students in the northwestern Turkish province of Bursa were hospitalized on suspicion of food poisoning on March 28.

The students, who are staying at a dormitory linked to Uludağ University, fell sick after eating and were rushed to the university’s hospital suffering from nausea and vomiting.

An official from the provincial dormitories directorate said the general condition of the students is stable and they have started to be discharged from the hospital.
