CDC – Update Raw Tuna Outbreak in the US

A  total of 390 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Bareilly (376 persons) or SalmonellaNchanga (14 persons) have been reported from 27 states and the District of Columbia.

  • 47 ill persons have been hospitalised, and no deaths have been reported.
  • Collaborative investigation efforts of state, local, and federal public health agencies indicate that a frozen raw yellowfin tuna product, known as Nakaochi Scrape, from Moon Marine USA Corporation is the likely source of this outbreak.
  • Consumers should not eat the recalled product, and retailers should not serve the recalled raw Nakaochi Scrape tuna product from Moon Marine USA Corporation.

 

US- Carrot Juice Recall- Clostridium botulinum

Healthy Choice Island Blends, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA, is recalling all sizes of LIQUID GOLD CARROT JUICE including 128oz, 64oz, 32oz, and 16 oz, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness.

Foodborne botulism is a severe type of food poisoning caused by the ingestion of foods containing the potent neurotoxin formed during growth of the organism. Foodborne botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking, breathing and swallowing. Weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.

People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Liquid Gold Carrot Juice was distributed in California and sold wholesale to produce companies.

Product was sold in plastic see-through containers in gallon, half-gallon, and quart sizes. Product has a white label branded Liquid Gold with picture of carrots and a glass of carrot juice, with UPC Code 7 63213 00130.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

US – High E.coli Levels-Boil Water Notice- Aberdeen

E.coli levels in the drinking water supply for the city of Aberdeen, SD have reached dangerous levels, prompting city officials to issue a boil water advisory.

Aberdeen residents should not drink tap water without boiling it first. Before it is safe to drink, the water needs to boil for a full minute. “Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice,” the advisory states

US Alfalfa Sprout Recall- Salmonella

Leasa Industries Inc. of Florida is recalling 433 cases of alfalfa sprouts because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Routine customer sampling revealed the presence of Salmonella in the product. The company is voluntarily recalling the product. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of this product.

Research – Campy/Salmonella/E.coli Heat Resistance

The aim of this research was to determine the decimal reduction times of bacteria present on chicken fillet in boiling water. The experiments were conducted with Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli. Whole chicken breast fillets were inoculated with the pathogens, stored overnight (4∘C), and subsequently cooked. The surface temperature reached 70∘C within 30 sec and 85∘C within one minute. Extremely high decimal reduction times of 1.90, 1.97, and 2.20 min were obtained for C. jejuni, E. coli, and S. typhimurium, respectively. Chicken meat and refrigerated storage before cooking enlarged the heat resistance of the food borne pathogens. Additionally, a high challenge temperature or fast heating rate contributed to the level of heat resistance. The data were used to assess the probability of illness (campylobacteriosis) due to consumption of chicken fillet as a function of cooking time. The data revealed that cooking time may be far more critical than previously assumed.

Chevallier society shall withdraw from the sale of cheese “Neufchatel” following the detection of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes .

Ireland – E.coli in Creches

Four Longford children have been hospitalised after a recent outbreak of E.coli in two Co Longford creches.

 

Over the past six weeks there have been two outbreaks of verotoxin producing the E.coli infection in Co Longford, which predominantly affected young children. Four children who were hospitalised have since been discharged home. As a precautionary measure, two crèches were closed for a period of time but both have since re-opened.

It is understood the Department of Public Health carried out screening of all other children who attended the same crèches as the children affected. This is in accordance with the national guidelines on the management of these infections.

FDA – Univiscerated Fish – Clostridium botulinum

Euphoria Fancy Food Inc. at 149-151 2nd Ave. Brooklyn NY 11215 is recalling DRIED BREAM discovered by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors during a routine inspection and subsequent analysis of product by Food Laboratory personnel confirming that the fish was not properly eviscerated prior to processing.

This product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause Botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne illness.

The sale of this type of fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish.  Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. Symptoms of  botulism include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty in swallowing and respiratory paralysis.

The recalled DRIED BREAM comes in an un-coded, 7.5 ounce vacuum packed plastic bag and was sold nationwide.  The UPC number is 7 930042 250954. It is a product of Russia.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.  Consumers who have DRIED BREAM are advised not to eat it, but should return it to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-768-3400.

FSA – Recall – Salmonella Mixed Organic Nuts

Sainsbury’s has recalled all packs of its own-brand So Organic Fruit and Nut Mix, as salmonella has been detected in one pack. If you’ve bought the product don’t eat it. The Agency has issued a Product Recall Information Notice.

Salmonella is a common cause of food poisoning. It has been found in food products including unpasteurised milk, eggs, meat, poultry, and fresh produce.

Sainsbury’s has recalled the affected product as a precaution, and customer notices have been displayed in stores explaining why the product has been recalled. If you have bought the product, don’t eat it. You can return it to the store for a full refund.

No other Sainsbury’s products are known to be affected

Spain – Salmonella Outbreak from Mining Bar

There has been a trickle of cases throughout the week, although it was only last Friday when health officials confirmed that this was an outbreak of Salmonellosis.

About 30 patients who had moderate gastroenteritis being treated by emergency centres in La Union and Cartagena, had a common feature in addition to their condition: they had been guests at the popular bar Mining Union.
