Canada – Products with Chia Seeds Recall – Salmonella

The Salmonella outbreak linked to chia seed products is prompting more recalls of secondary products made with those ingredients. Now two types of Madegood brand Chia and Berries Fruit & Nut Bars are being recalled because they were made with recalled products. While there is a Salmonella outbreak that is currently ongoing, no reports of illness have been received associated with the consumption of these specific products.

The Appalachian District Health Department says that as of Monday afternoon, 37 individuals had symptoms consistent with Salmonellosis.

Three days after health officials in Watauga County confirmed a salmonella outbreak at a restaurant in Boone, authorities are saying they have seven confirmed cases of Salmonellosis and another 30 who are showing symptoms of the illness. None of those individuals have been hospitalized, authorities say.

The Appalachian District Health Department says the illness originated at Proper Restaurant on South Water Street.

GreenSmoothieGirl is recalling two products which contain organic sprouted chia powder for Salmonella. A 10-state Salmonella outbreak has been linked to chia powder.

“To date, there have been no reports of sickness traced back to our products, but we have chosen to exert the utmost level of caution in this situation to protect the health and well-being of our customers. We are, therefore, voluntarily recalling products that contain organic sprouted chia powder,” said the company’s CEO Robyn Openshaw.

The recalled products, were distributed to retail stores in UT, OR, MT and through Internet sales, include: GreenSmoothieGirl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood, 16 oz, UPC 853811005036 with lot number AC030141, Exp. 1/2016 (Silver Ziplock Pouch) and GreenSmoothieGirl Sprouted Ground TriOmega Superfood, 16 oz, no UPC, with lot number BIO13TOP300, Exp. 10/2015 (Gold Ziplock Pouch). Consumers who have purchased these products should not use them.

Navitas Naturals has expanded the recall of chia powder linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 17 people in 10 states. The recall now includes products with “best by” dates in November 2015.

“Based on investigations by FDA and California Department of Public Health, one of our suppliers Health Matters America Inc. has expanded their recall of Chia products. As a result, we are expanding our voluntary recall to include a broader date range of products. Our business depends on providing safe and healthy food and we will not take chances with our consumer’s wellbeing. Because of this priority, in an abundance of caution, we have deliberately and voluntarily expanded this recall,” said Navitas Naturals CEO Zach Adelman. “Based on information from CDC we are not aware of any reported illnesses associated with the products included in this expanded date range.

23-state Salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry flocks has sickened 60 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). About 40 percent of those sickened were children 10 and under. At least 10 people were hospitalised.

Health investigators have linked this outbreak of Salmonella Infantis and Salmonella Newport infections to contact with live poultry from Mt. Healthy Hatcheries in Ohio, the same mail order hatchery linked to live poultry Salmonella outbreaks in 2013 and 2012.

For those sickened in this outbreak, onset of illness ranged from February 4 to April 21. Those sickened range in age from younger than one year to 95 years old, the median age is 29 years.

The current multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to non-dairy cheeses made from raw cashews is not the first to be linked to nuts. During the last decade, illnesses from Salmonella have been linked to a variety of nuts including pine nuts, peanuts, pistachios, hazelnuts and almonds.

The current outbreak has sickened 14 people in three states: twelve in California, one in Nevada and one in Wyoming. Three people have been hospitalized. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted that outbreak strain of Salmonella Stanley is rarely seen outside of Southeast Asia where the cheese maker, Cultured Kitchen of West Sacramento, sources its cashews.

A Salmonella outbreak that is unrelated to Foster Farms chicken has sickened at least seven people in California,  Food Poisoning Bulletin has learned.  Several of those who became ill are residents of Shasta County. It’s possible that one illness in another state is also part of the outbreak.

A spokesperson from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said state health officials are working together with local jurisdictions on an investigation of an outbreak of Salmonella Lomalinda infections, but would not provide further information saying “CDPH does not comment on ongoing investigations.”

Bailey’s Choice Dog Treats of Georgia is recalling some packages of certain chicken jerky treats because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The chicken treats are in various sizes and with these lot dates: June 5, 2013 and October 8, 2013. Those two lots tested positive for the bacteria.

USA – Cyclospora Cases Still Building

In addition to battling an outbreak of Cyclospora infections and a Salmonella outbreak, the state of Iowa is reported increased Cryptosporidiosis cases this summer.  That parasite is usually spread through people with diarrhea swimming in pools, lakes, and rivers. The parasite gets into the water and people contract the illness when they swallow swimming water.

There have been at least 358 cases of Cryptosporidiosis reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health this year; 272 reported since June 1, 2013. An additional 138 cases are under investigation.

A Victorian egg supplier is under investigation and one person has ongoing  health issues following Canberra’s largest salmonella outbreak, which has left  health professionals ”struck by the severity” of the symptoms and high  infection rate.

The outbreak, which affected 140 people and hospitalised 15 in mid-May, was  traced back to raw egg mayonnaise served at the Copa Brazilian restaurant in  Dickson. But ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Paul Kelly confirmed on Wednesday that  the focus had  turned to an egg producer in Victoria who supplied eggs to the  Copa.

 

Russia – Cream Puffs – Salmonella Outbreak

CHELYABINSK, Russia, May 20 (UPI) — About 66  pounds of cream puffs were removed from stores in the Russian Urals city of  Chelyabinsk on Monday after a salmonella outbreak was reported there.

“The police have found 12 outlets selling these products. About 30 kilograms  [about 66 pounds] of cream puffs were removed from sale. A working group has  been set up to find other outlets. An investigation is under way,” a spokeswoman  for the Chelyabinsk region police department told ITAR-Tass.

ITAR-Tass said 36 people, including eight children, were hospitalized with  salmonella poisoning in Chelyabinsk, two in serious condition.

Local news sources said as many as 41 people have been sickened, ITAR-Tass  reported.
