USA – FDA – Recall Dog and Cat Food – Salmonella

FDAFDA

Pro-Pet LLC, St. Marys, Ohio, has initiated a voluntary recall of a limited number of Dry Dog and Cat Foods for possible Salmonella contamination. A single field test indicated products manufactured during a two day period, on a single production line may have the potential for Salmonella contamination. Pro-Pet LLC is voluntarily recalling the potentially impacted products made during this timeframe. There have been no reports of illness related to this product to date.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

USA – Rare Salmonella Strain – Salmonella Overschie

Food Poisoning Bulletin

A rare strain of Salmonella, Salmonella Overschie, caused a December 2013 outbreak in Oregon. Two people have been sickened by the strain which has never before been seen in Oregon and is typically seen less than four times a year nationwide.

The two cases are in Lane and Coos counties, which do not border one another. Both case patients are female one is a child between the ages of 0 to 9 years old and the other is a women between the ages of 20 to 29.  Their exposures seem to have been within 24 hours of each other, but onset of symptoms was eight days apart.

Pulsed field gel electrophoresis tests show the isolates from the two patients are a 99 percent match. No other matches have been identified anywhere in the U.S. This indicates the two patients were sickened by the same source.

Research Salmonella Biofilm Resistance

ASMOrg Salmonella

Salmonellosis is the second most common cause of food-borne illness worldwide. Contamination of surfaces in food processing environments may result in biofilm formation with a risk of food contamination. Effective decontamination of biofilm contaminated surfaces is challenging. Using the CDC biofilm reactor, the activity of sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide and benzalkonium chloride were examined against an early (48 hours) and relatively mature (168 hours) Salmonella biofilm. All 3 agents result in reduction in viable counts of Salmonella, however only sodium hydroxide resulted in eradication of the early biofilm. None of the agents achieved eradication of mature biofilm, even at 90-minutes contact time. Studies of activity of chemical disinfection against biofilm should include assessment of activity against mature biofilm. The difficulty of eradication of established Salmonella biofilm serves to emphasise the priority of preventing access of Salmonella to post-cook areas of food production facilities.

Research – Freshwater Turtles and Salmonella – Campylobacter

Science Daily800px-Florida_Box_Turtle_Digon3_re-edited

Professors from the University CEU Cardenal Herrera studied 200 specimens of freshwater turtles from eleven Valencian wetland areas, to determine the prevalence of Salmonella and Campylobacter in these animals, because of their potential risk of transmitting gastrointestinal diseases to humans, especially children. According to the results, published in the journal Plos One, 11% of the analysed specimens of freshwater turtles were found positive for Salmonella. However, Campylobacter was not detected in any of them. This is the first study to rule out terrapins as transmitters of campylobacteriosis to humans.
