FSA – Recall – Licorice Root Capsules – Salmonella

Viridian International Ltd recalls two batches of its Licorice Root Vegetarian Capsules due to the detection of Salmonella.

As a precautionary measure, Viridian International Ltd is recalling two batch codes of the above product due to the detection of salmonella in the ingredient used to produce the capsules, which may pose a risk to health.

  • Licorice Root 30 Vegetarian Capsules and Licorice Root 90 Vegetarian Capsules
  • Pack size: Glass jars containing 30/90 capsules
  • Batch codes: 2912206 for 30 capsules and 3012206 for 90 capsules
  • ‘Best before’ date: both products 22/6/2016

Viridian International Ltd is recalling the above product. Product recall notices will be displayed in store, advising consumers of the recall and what they can do if they have purchased the affected product. A recall notice has also been displayed on the company’s website.

A copy of the Viridian International Ltd product recall information notice is attached to this notice.

No other Viridian International Ltd products are known to be affected.

UK – FSA – FSA Seeks Information on Cost of Proposed Stricter Criteria for Listeria

The Food Standards Agency is asking businesses to provide information and data on the impact of proposed new guidance. The Agency wants to know the costs and benefits of guidance for stricter criteria for Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat (RTE) food supplied to hospitals, nursing homes and similar healthcare settings. Responses to the questionnaire should be received by Friday 23 August 2013.

Listeria monocytogenes, a food-poisoning bacteria, has been found in a batch of Island Salads Coleslaw following sampling by Craigavon Borough Council. Listeria monocytogenes can cause illness in certain groups of people, such as pregnant women, unborn and newborn babies, and anyone with reduced immunity, particularly the over-60s.

Action taken by the company

The company has begun a recall of this product. Point-of-sale notices have been placed in stores.
No other Island Salads products are known to be affected.

Advice to consumers

If you have purchased the above product, please do not consume it but return to your nearest store for a full refund.

UK – FSA – Curry Leaves Reminder – Salmonella

The Food Standards Agency is reminding those who eat or use fresh curry leaves in their dishes, to ensure that the leaves are washed thoroughly before use. Cooking provides further assurance that these leaves are safe to eat.

The use of uncooked fresh curry leaves, which were contaminated with several different bacteria including salmonella, was the cause of a food poisoning outbreak which affected more than 400 people at the Street Spice festival in Newcastle. Johnson & Johnson Ltd has recalled several batches of Benecol® Peach & Apricot Yogurt Drink on a precautionary basis, because of possible yeast fermentation. If you have bought this product, please do not drink it. The Agency has issued a Product Recall Information Notice.

Ireland – FSAI Recall – Smoked Mackerel – Listeria monocytogenes

The implicated batch of Kari smoked mackerel is being recalled from consumers due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample tested in Poland. The batch was sold nationwide, mainly in Eastern European supermarkets.  Shops which have sold this batch must display a point-of-sale notice advising customers not to consume the implicated batch.

UK – FSA – Whitefish Processors Industry Guide Published

The guide, which can be purchased via the link above, provides advice on achieving best practice concerning the quality of fish purchased and its maintenance during processing, packaging and dispatch. In addition, it covers the requirements applicable to the processing of white fish, including filleting, smoking and freezing.

The guide sets out the means by which the white fish processor can comply with Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, and Regulation (EC) No. 853/2004 laying down specific rules for food of animal origin.

 

Ireland – Recall Fruit Platters – Salmonella

Freshcut Food Services Limited is recalling SuperValu Fruit Platter with chocolate 685g; Green Orchard Exotic Fruit Salad 400g; Green Orchard Watermelon Wedge 800g and Green Orchard Fruit Platter with dipping chocolate 685g manufactured by them using watermelon from Costa Rica which may be contaminated with Salmonella. Consumers who have already purchased the implicated fruit products should not consume them as they could cause Salmonellosis. Symptoms of Salmonellosis include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever 12-72 hours after consumption.

UK – FSA – HPA – Cryptosporidum 2012 Outbreak

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) today published findings of an investigation into an outbreak of Cryptosporidium infection that affected around 300 people in England and Scotland in May 2012.

The Food Standards Agency was part of the outbreak control team, led by the HPA, and gathered information on the production and distribution of salad vegetables to help identify the likely source of the outbreak.

UK – FSA – Cheese Recall Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes, a food-poisoning bacteria, has been found in some batches of Loch Arthur Creamery cheese following sampling by Dumfries and Galloway Council. Loch Arthur Creamery is recalling all date codes up to and including to 11 February 2013 and the Food Standards Agency is issuing a Product Recall Information Notice.
