Singapore – Firms fined in Singapore for breaching food safety rules

Three companies were fined recently in Singapore for violating food safety regulations.

Lee Peng Hwa, the proprietor of LPH Catering, was told to pay SG $12,000 (U.S. $8,900) for multiple offenses committed under the Sale of Food (Non-Retail Food Business) Regulations.

Alternative Selection Pte, a food processing company and retailer, was fined SG $6,400 ($4,700) for tampering with expiry dates on prepacked food products.

Go Go Foods Singapore Pte, a licensed food importer, was fined SG $3,500 ($2,600) for operating an unlicensed cold store. Director Yatagawa Koichi was also charged the same amount for failing to prevent the offense.

Denmark – Salmonella in turkey bacon

Danish Crown is recalling Den Grønne butcher turkey bacon, as salmonella has been found in the raw material for the product.
If you have the product, you should discard it or return it to the store where it was purchased.

Why is the product being recalled?

A check at the Polish raw material supplier has detected salmonella in the raw material.

There is therefore a risk that there may be salmonella in the product. The symptoms of infection with salmonella are diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, headache and possibly nausea and vomiting. The illness can last from a few days to several weeks.

UK survey shows gap between food hygiene knowledge and practises.

I would like to have said that I was surprised but I am not.

A survey on habits and beliefs around food hygiene has found some people wash raw chicken before cooking and others check their phones while preparing food.

Ipsos interviewed 2,231 adults aged 16 to 75 in the United Kingdom online in March 2024.

Overall, 85 percent of adults said they cook or prepare food at home at least several times a week.

One potentially harmful habit was people using the same tea towel for multiple purposes, including drying hands and kitchen objects. The data suggest that almost four in 10 do this at least frequently. Even among those who say they cook and prepare food at home on a daily basis, the proportion of those sharing this habit is 36 percent.

More than a third always or frequently check their phone whilst preparing food. One in five store leftover food in open containers in the fridge.

Almost one in three respondents frequently or always wash raw chicken before cooking it. This practice can cause cross-contamination through splashing bacteria onto hands, clothes, worktops and utensils. Microscopic droplets can cause cross-contamination.
