USA – School Norovirus Outbreak –

About 130 children were out sick for two days this past week at a northwest Indiana elementary school, and district officials said that Norovirus was most likely to blame.

“Twenty-seven percent of our population is significant, and it’s a concern,” Lake Central School Corporation Assistant Superintendent Al Gandolfi said about Peifer Elementary School in Schererville, IL. The school was being thoroughly cleaned and sanitized by a a large custodial crew.

New Zealand – Yersinia pseudotuberculosis Outbreak

More than 100 people across New Zealand are sick from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, and at least 35 people have been hospitalized.

Most cases have been in the Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington areas.

Outbreaks of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, which are not common, have previously been associated with the consumption of contaminated food, especially raw or undercooked pork products, and sometimes fresh produce.

USA – Over 300 Sickened at a Wedding – Clostridium perfringens

More than 300 people were sickened with Clostridium perfringens from a April 5 wedding in Sullivan, MO, according to the Franklin County Health Department.

Health officials told The Missourian that the cause was gravy that took too long to cool down, allowing the bacteria to grow and emit toxins.

Hours after the wedding, guests were stricken with abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

After food and stool samples tested negative for Norovirus, the state lab sent the samples to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which confirmed the presence of Clostridium perfringens.

China – New Laws to Combat Prevalent Food Safety Issues

In a move to clean up China’s international reputation for appalling food safety, new food safety laws will ban firms caught producing or selling unsafe foods from operating. As a result of these new laws, if a company’s food license is revoked, company executives and employees will not be allowed to work in the food industry for five years.

USA – Possible Food Poisoning Kids Football Tournament

As many as 80 children and parents have reportedly fallen ill with nausea, diarrhea and vomiting after attending a youth football tournament in Las Vegas last week, according to NBC affiliate News 3.

As of Sunday afternoon, the exact cause of illness was still unclear, but at least 13 children and five adults have been treated at hospitals for foodborne illness.

At least 27 Floridians have been sickened this year – and nine have died– from infections of Vibrio vulnificus, a deadly bacterium that lives in warm seawater and is commonly associated with eating raw oysters and other shellfish. Garden Fresh Foods of Milwaukee, WI, is recalling more than 19,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and ham products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service sent out an announcement about this recall on Wednesday evening.

The cause of the outbreak is still unknown, according to county health officials. Investigators have begun interviewing victims to see where or what they might have eaten in the days leading up to their illnesses.
