Cyclospora, a single-celled parasite that can cause months of illness, is considered a rare parasite in the United States, but for folks in some states its becoming a little too familiar. Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and Texas have had cyclospora outbreaks for two straight summers. Mayland, Montana and Oregon missed last summer’s outbreaks that sickened at least 631 people, but they are getting to know about the little bug this summer as they investigate spikes in reported illnesses. The multi-state hepatitis A outbreak linked to Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berry and pomegranate mix sold at Costco stores has grown to include 151 sickened. Sixty-six people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. No deaths have been reported.

Food Poisoning Bulletin

A multi-state Cyclospora outbreak has sickened at least 267 people and hospitalized eight of them, according to federal and state health authorities involved in a collaborative investigation. The rare parasite has infected at least 127 people Iowa, 68 people in Nebraska, 65 people in Texas, 4 people in Wisconsin, 2 people in Illinois and 1 person in Kansas.

USA – Recall – Salmonella – Tahini Paste

Krinos Foods of New York is recalling Tahini sesame paste because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Healthy people infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

The recalled Tahini is in 1 pound and 2 pound glass jars. The UPC code of the 1 pound jar is 0-75013-28500-3 and the UPC code of the 2 pound jar is 0-75013-28510-2. The recalled lots have a expiration date code on the lid between “EXP OCT 16 – 2014″ up to and including “EXP MAR 15 – 2015″. The Michigan Department of Agriculture conducted routine sampling and found the contamination.
