US Mexican Cheese Recall – Listeria

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Darrel Aubertine today warned consumers in the metropolitan New York area, including Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn, to not consume certain “Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese” products made by Mexicali Cheese Corp. located at 91-52 87th Street in Woodhaven, New York due to possible Listeria contamination.

To date, no illnesses are known by the Department to be associated with this product.

Hand Sanitiser Contaminated with Bacteria

TORONTO – A hand sanitizer meant to protect people from germs is being recalled because of bacterial contamination, Health Canada said Thursday.

Kimberly-Clark is recalling its Kleenex-brand Luxury Foam Hand Sanitiser after company testing detected bacteria that may pose serious health risks to people with weakened immune systems, especially those with the lung disorder cystic fibrosis.

The bacteria identified in the tested samples are from the Burkholderia cepacia group. These bacteria pose little risk to healthy people, but for those with immune systems weakened by other illnesses, the microbes can cause serious problems, including pneumonia and blood infection.

US – Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Salmonella Recall

As a precautionary measure, Banner Mountain Sprouts is voluntarily recalling organic sprouts under the following names: 4oz. zesty greens, 5oz. sprout salad, 4oz. clover, 2lb. clover, 4oz. alfalfa/broccoli, 4oz. alfalfa sprouts, and 1lb. & 2lb. alfalfa sprouts because they may be contaminated with salmonella. Routine testing showed signs of salmonella and Banner Mountain Sprouts was notified of possible contamination.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause an acute infection that can have symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Symptoms usually develop within one to four days after eating contaminated food. Most cases resolve without the need for medical attention. However, some individuals develop a serious illness that can lead to hospitalization.

The sprouts were distributed through retail stores and wholesalers in California. The products come in a 4 or 5 oz. clear, plastic, clamshell container and a 1lb. or 2lb. ziplock bag with a sell by date from 6/17/12 to 7/6/12. No illnesses have been associated with any Banner Mountain sprouts.

US- Bagged Salad Recall – Listeria

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling 1,077 cases of bagged salads.

Due to a possible health risk from Listeria monocytogenes. Dole Fresh Vegetables is coordinating closely with regulatory officials. No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.

The Product Code and Use-by date are in the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode. The salads were distributed in six U.S. states (Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia).

No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall. This precautionary recall notification is being issued due to an isolated instance in which a sample of Marketside Leafy Romaine salad yielded a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes in a random sample test conducted by the State of North Carolina.

E.coli O145 Outbreak – US 6 States

A total of 15 persons infected with the outbreak strain of STEC O145 infection have been identified in 6 states.

The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Alabama (2), California (1), Florida (1), Georgia (5), Louisiana (5), and Tennessee (1).

Four ill persons have been hospitalised. One death has been reported in Louisiana.

Australia- Leg Ham Recall – Listeria monocytogenes

Marchetti Smallgoods has recalled Leg Ham (sliced) from small independent supermarkets in Victoria due to Listeria monocytogenes  contamination. Listeria may cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the elderly and people with low immune systems. Consumers should not eat this product. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.

CDC – Update Raw Tuna Outbreak in the US

A  total of 390 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Bareilly (376 persons) or SalmonellaNchanga (14 persons) have been reported from 27 states and the District of Columbia.

  • 47 ill persons have been hospitalised, and no deaths have been reported.
  • Collaborative investigation efforts of state, local, and federal public health agencies indicate that a frozen raw yellowfin tuna product, known as Nakaochi Scrape, from Moon Marine USA Corporation is the likely source of this outbreak.
  • Consumers should not eat the recalled product, and retailers should not serve the recalled raw Nakaochi Scrape tuna product from Moon Marine USA Corporation.

 

US- Carrot Juice Recall- Clostridium botulinum

Healthy Choice Island Blends, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA, is recalling all sizes of LIQUID GOLD CARROT JUICE including 128oz, 64oz, 32oz, and 16 oz, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal foodborne illness.

Foodborne botulism is a severe type of food poisoning caused by the ingestion of foods containing the potent neurotoxin formed during growth of the organism. Foodborne botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking, breathing and swallowing. Weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.

People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Liquid Gold Carrot Juice was distributed in California and sold wholesale to produce companies.

Product was sold in plastic see-through containers in gallon, half-gallon, and quart sizes. Product has a white label branded Liquid Gold with picture of carrots and a glass of carrot juice, with UPC Code 7 63213 00130.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

US – High E.coli Levels-Boil Water Notice- Aberdeen

E.coli levels in the drinking water supply for the city of Aberdeen, SD have reached dangerous levels, prompting city officials to issue a boil water advisory.

Aberdeen residents should not drink tap water without boiling it first. Before it is safe to drink, the water needs to boil for a full minute. “Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice,” the advisory states

Leasa Industries Inc. of Florida is recalling 433 cases of alfalfa sprouts because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Routine customer sampling revealed the presence of Salmonella in the product. The company is voluntarily recalling the product. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of this product.
