USA – Texas man dies of Vibrio infection after eating raw oysters

GALVESTON, Texas (WFLA) — A Texas man died of a deadly bacterial infection after eating raw oysters, according to local health officials.

Officials with the Galveston County Health District in Texas announced the man’s cause of death to be Vibrio vulnificus infection last week.

Taipei, April 27 (CNA) One more patient died in the recent food poisoning outbreak at the Xinyi branch of Malaysian restaurant chain Polam Kopitiam in Taipei, bringing the total number of deaths to three, Deputy Health Minister Victor Wang (王必勝) said on Saturday.

As of Friday, 35 people were reported to have fallen ill after dining at the Xinyi restaurant from March 18-24, including two deaths reported in late March.

The latest death was one of the four severe cases under intensive care. The patient died of multiple organ failure despite having received treatment that utilized the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) life-support system, Wang said.

Taipei Medical University Hospital said in a text message that the patient was transferred to the hospital on March 24, and died Saturday despite being given full treatment.

According to Wang, it was clear that this incident was a case of Bongkrekic acid-led poisoning that occurred within a specific time and space.

India- One dead, more than 75 ill due to food poisoning in Chandrapur

One person died and more than 75 took ill due to food poisoning in Majri colliery area in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district on Sunday, a health official said.

The incident occurred after more than 400 people had ‘prasad’ on Saturday evening during a religious function on the eve of Chaitra Navratri Mahotsav in a Kali temple, he said.

“Some of them started feeling unwell after reaching home and 79 arrived at Warora civil hospital past midnight. The condition of six persons was critical and they were shifted to Chandrapur district hospital. Of these, a man identified as Gurufem Yadav died,” the official said.

The other patients are stable and are under treatment, he added.

Viet Nam – 1 student dead, dozens hospitalized for suspected food poisoning in Vietnam

HANOI, April 5 (Xinhua) — A fifth-grade student died and dozens of others were hospitalized on Friday morning in Vietnam’s central city of Nha Trang after having breakfast sold by street vendors or at local food stalls, Vietnam News Agency reported.

After having breakfast on Friday morning, a student from Vinh Truong primary school reportedly felt sick and fainted.

Doctors said the cases were suspected to be caused by food poisoning, VnExpress reported.

As of Friday noon, those students’ state of health has been stable, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Local authorities were further investigating the cause of the case

Taiwan – Three staff members at food poisoning restaurant banned from leaving Taiwan

The legal representative of Polam Kopitiam as well as a branch manager and a chef were banned from leaving the country by prosecutors Thursday for their “suspected involvement” in what is believed to be a food poisoning outbreak.

The case has left two dead and 17 seeking medical treatment as of Thursday, according to health authorities.

All of the people who fell sick dined at the restaurant’s branch in Xinyi District between March 19-23 and consumed dishes made of rice noodles.

Taipei, March 27 (CNA) A man in his mid-60s has become the second person to have died in a suspected food poisoning outbreak at a branch of Malaysian restaurant Polam Kopitiam in Taipei that has left at least eight people who dined there ill.

The man, who ate at the vegetarian restaurant on March 19, died Wednesday morning at Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital due to multiple organ failures after efforts to resuscitate him failed, according to Hung Tzu-jen (洪子仁), the hospital’s vice superintendent.

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) on Wednesday ordered all Taipei branches of Polam Kopitiam closed as prosecutors investigate the case.

In the quiet village of Bukasami, located in the heart of Jinja district, Eastern Uganda, a somber gathering to bid farewell to Ahamad Magumba, a respected county khadhi, took an unforeseen and tragic turn. On February 13, what was meant to be a ceremony of remembrance quickly spiraled into a public health emergency. Three attendees lost their lives, and an additional 100 were hospitalized with symptoms pointing unmistakably to food poisoning.

The laboratory findings, including the detection of a high number of colony-forming units of C. perfringens in the consumed food, further cement the diagnosis. This bacterium, often found in improperly stored or cooked food, can lead to devastating outbreaks, as witnessed in Bukasami village.

UK – Dairy firm linked to STEC outbreak resumes cheese sales

A cheese company linked to an E. coli outbreak in the United Kingdom has been allowed to restart sales of products.

Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese can resume selling batches of five raw milk cheeses made on or after Oct. 1, 2023. This includes the mild, creamy, tasty, mature, and smoked Lancashire varieties, plus Waitrose and Partners, Farmhouse Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese.

However, any of these cheeses put on the market up to and including Feb. 5, 2024, should not be eaten and must be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.

There are now 36 cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O145 linked to the outbreak, up from 30 in an earlier update. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Public Health Scotland (PHS), and other agencies are investigating the incident.

Sick people live in England, Wales and Scotland. They fell ill from late July 2023, with the majority in December and all had symptom onset before Dec. 24, 2023.

Of 19 people with information available, a dozen reported bloody diarrhea, and 11 have been hospitalized. One person developed haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), and another died.

For 30 cases where information is known, 15 are female, and 15 are male, with ages ranging from 7 to 81 and a median of 35 years old.

Research – Foodborne botulism outbreak involving different nationalities during the Rugby World Cup: critical role of credit card data and rapid international cooperation, France, September 2023

An unprecedented outbreak of 15 cases (including one death) of foodborne botulism occurred in Bordeaux, France, in September 2023 during the Rugby World Cup. Here we describe the national and international outbreak investigation using credit card data and control measures taken.

On 10 September 2023, the Bordeaux University Hospital reported three suspected cases of botulism to the local public health authorities [1]. All suspected cases had visited the same restaurant (Restaurant A) in Bordeaux on different dates and reported consumption of canned marinated sardines. The sardines were part of a batch made by Restaurant A on 1 September 2023 and served between 1 and 10 September. Cases were of different nationalities. In the previous days, the city had hosted two international rugby games as part of the Rugby World Cup attended by a large number of international visitors. An investigation was initiated to identify and contact persons visiting restaurant A and to contact public health agencies of countries whose citizens were affected by the outbreak.

Considering the severity of botulism and the urgency of control measures to stop the outbreak, an active search for persons who had consumed the sardines was performed by using data retrieved from credit card receipts of restaurant A.

A suspected case of botulism was defined as a person with symptoms compatible with botulism (oculomotor palsy, mydriasis, ptosis, dysphagia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea), living or visiting the Bordeaux area and visiting Restaurant A between 1 and 10 September 2023. A confirmed case was defined as detection of type B botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) in stool and/or serum samples and/or detection of type B  in stools from a suspected case.

By screening meal orders and credit card receipts of Restaurant A, we identified 29 customers who had ordered canned sardines (Figure 1). Among these, 12 had already been identified as suspected cases, 14 were contacted by the French or British health authorities and were considered non-cases as they did not present any symptoms and three were symptomatic British citizens who were urgently referred to an emergency care in the United Kingdom (UK) on 13 September where they received botulinum antitoxin.
