USA – Top sirloin steaks recalled for possible Salmonella contamination

In Bridgeview, IL, SMI Holdings Inc., doing business as Stampede Meat,  has recalled approximately 484,800 pounds of beef products that may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The raw beef products were incorporated into a non-meat ingredient, Au Jus Seasoning, which tested positive for the presence of Salmonella.  The frozen raw beef top sirloin steak items were produced on various dates from Feb. 19, 2018 through March 14, 2018.

The CDC is working with several states to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses, an agency spokesperson said Monday evening. Earlier in the day the FDA posted a recall notice from Natural Grocers for its branded “Coconut Smiles Organic” because of Salmonella contamination.Six illnesses have been reported in connection with the Natural Grocers coconut, according to the company’s recall notice. The Lakewood, CO, company and the Food and Drug Administration both found Salmonella in packages of the coconut

Natural Grocers distributed the implicated “Coconut Smiles Organic” to 145 stores in 19 states.

Mozambique – 55 Tonnes of Processed Meat Incinerated linked to South Africa – Listeria Outbreak

Maputo — The Mozambican government’s National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) last week incinerated 55 tonnes of assorted types of processed meat from South Africa, valued at about 13 million meticais (about 210,000 US dollars)

INAE general inspector Acácio Foia confirmed the incineration at a Maputo press conference on Monday.

The products are chicken derivatives, such as polony, produced by the companies Enterprise and Rainbow Chicken, following an outbreak of listeriosis in South Africa.

The South African Health Ministry traced the outbreak to an Enterprise food facility in Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo province. The bacterium listeria, which causes the disease, has also been traced to a Rainbow Chicken facility in Free State province.

According to Acácio, the products were removed from the formal and informal market but there are still 40 tonnes of these processed meats still to be incinerated.

Namibia – Namibia reports Listeriosis case in man who consumed Viennas

Namibia health officials are reporting a confirmed case of Listeriosis in a 41-year-old man from Tsumeb town in Oshikoto Region.

The patient with a known chronic co-morbidity, was admitted to a private hospital in Windhoek on 5 March 2018. He had travelled from Tsumeb to Windhoek on 4 March 2018. On 12 March 2018, abdominal fluid bacterial culture isolated Listeria monocytogenes. The patient remains admitted in a stable clinical condition.

Preliminary investigations reportedly indicated that the patient consumed meat products (Viennas) purchased from a local butchery in Tsumeb two weeks prior to onset of illness.

Australia – Rockmelon Listeria Death Toll Rise to Six

A NSW woman in her 90s with significant underlying health conditions has passed away from listeriosis taking the number of deaths linked to contaminated rockmelon to six – three people from NSW and three from Victoria.The total number of people affected nationwide remains at 19.

Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director Communicable Diseases NSW Health said the woman had developed listeriosis before the outbreak was identified.

“There have been no new cases notified associated with the outbreak in NSW since 19 February when it was first identified,” Dr Sheppeard said.

“It is still possible that more cases will be linked to the outbreak given the incubation period for the disease is up to 70 days, however there is no ongoing risk of listeriosis from rockmelons now on sale.

 

Canada – 30 Sick in Canada from Frozen Raw Chicken – Salmonella

In Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, there have been a total of 30 cases of Salmonella illness linked to poultry, including frozen raw breaded chicken products. There have been no recall warnings associated with this outbreak. The Public Health Agency of Canada is collaborating with provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections in four provinces with cases of human illness linked to poultry, including frozen raw breaded chicken products. The investigation is ongoing, and this public health notice will be updated on a regular basis as the investigation evolves.The risk to Canadians is low. Salmonella is commonly found in raw chicken and frozen raw breaded chicken products. Illnesses can be avoided if safe food handling, preparation and cooking practices are followed when preparing these types of food products.

USA – Natural Grocers Issues Recall on Coconut Smiles Organic Due to Salmonella

Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc., a Lakewood, Colorado-based natural grocery chain, is recalling Natural Grocers brand 10-ounce Coconut Smiles Organic due to the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

The recalled product is packaged in clear plastic bags weighing 10 ounces and bears the “Natural Grocers” label. All packages with packed-on dates prior to 18-075 are subject to recall. The packed-on date can be found in the bottom left-hand corner of the label.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Salmonella in some packages. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that a sample of taken by the Food and Drug Administration tested positive for Salmonella.

USA – Oregon Food Bank Voluntarily Recalls Nutritional Yeast

Oregon Food Bank is voluntarily recalling 1,219 pounds of nutritional yeast, which was donated to the food bank. No illness has been reported but it was donated at the same time as two other recalled products — chia and pumpkin seeds.

The nutritional yeast was distributed in Oregon and Clark County, Washington through the Oregon Food Bank Network of regional food banks and participating food pantries. The product was distributed in one pound plastic poly film bags with a twist-type closure or a re-sealable pouch. All nutritional yeast was distributed between November 1, 2017 and March 16, 2018.

USA – PDX Aromatics Expands Recall of Kratom Products Because of Possible Health Risk – Salmonella

PDX Aromatics, DBA Kraken Kratom, Phytoextractum, and Soul Speciosa, is expanding the scope of their 3/9/2018 voluntary recall of certain kratom white vein powder and capsule products and red vein powder products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall is being initiated in response to additional positive findings of Salmonella associated with Aromatics’ products following the FDA initial investigation.
