Between 5 June and 15 July 2012 four people died as a result of a legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Edinburgh. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive and Lothian and Borders Police into the circumstances of the deaths began immediately under the direction of the specialist Health and Safety Division of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The investigation involved detailed analysis of samples from a number of sites in an effort to identify the source of the bacteria that caused the deaths of four people. Unfortunately, it has proved impossible to identify the source of the Legionella bacteria which resulted in the deaths of four people. As a result Crown Counsel has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute any person or organisation for the deaths.

The decision on whether or not to hold a Fatal Accident Inquiry is yet to be made. This decision will be made following consultation with the families.

As a result of the investigation a number of Reports were submitted to the Crown Office for breaches of Health and Safety regulations unrelated to the deaths of the four people. Crown Counsel have instructed that a number of companies be prosecuted on Indictment in relation to those breaches. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has issued a statement about an outbreak of E.coli O157 in Scotland. The FSA is working with them, NHS Lothian, NHS Lanarkshire, Health Protection Scotland and Glasgow City Council environmental health, to identify the source. Seven cases of illness have so far been reported.

While there is no conclusive evidence at this stage, initial investigations have indicated that there may be a link to the consumption of burgers at the SSE Hydro venue. Glasgow City Council environmental health are working closely with the vendors to ensure all appropriate food hygiene standards are being met.

HPA Scotland – Contaminated Water Tanks

HPAS

A recent Estates and Facilities Alert issued by Health Facilities Scotland (HFS) has noted that contamination of water supplies was found in two recent projects within NHS Scotland. Extensive testing traced the source to the cold water storage tanks which gave TVC (Total Viable Count) readings for Pseudomonas in excess of 500cfu/100ml (after 72-hour incubation). TVC readings fell to 0cfu/100ml immediately after disinfecting the tanks but had reverted to high levels at later re-testing.

UK – Scottish Nursery Children Ill with Salmonella

Evening Telegraph

Several children who attend the same Dundee nursery have been hit by salmonella.

Eight children at Technotots Nursery in Brunel Road, Wester Gourdie Industrial Estate, were struck down with the bacteria last month.

NHS Tayside’s health protection team, environmental health officers and Health Protection Scotland have been called in to identify the source of exposure. As yet the investigation has not revealed what caused the salmonella infections but the owner of Technotots denies it originated in the nursery.

The children involved were not believed to have been taken seriously ill.

An NHS Tayside spokeswoman said none had to be hospitalised as a result of their condition.
