Canada – E.coli O157 Outbreak

Unknown Source Windham – Willimantic, Connecticut:  The North Central District Health Department has reported seven E. coli O157:H7 cases.  The Department of Public Health said it is investigating and believes all of the people were infected between mid-December and Christmas time.

All of them required the patients to be hospitalized, according to the department.

Health officials said five of them were mild cases, but two were a severe form of the bacterial infection known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, or HUS.  They said the people with the mild cases have already been released, but one of the two with HUS remains in the hospital.

The source of the E. coli O157:H7 has not been found.

USA – Cyclospora Cases Still Building

In addition to battling an outbreak of Cyclospora infections and a Salmonella outbreak, the state of Iowa is reported increased Cryptosporidiosis cases this summer.  That parasite is usually spread through people with diarrhea swimming in pools, lakes, and rivers. The parasite gets into the water and people contract the illness when they swallow swimming water.

There have been at least 358 cases of Cryptosporidiosis reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health this year; 272 reported since June 1, 2013. An additional 138 cases are under investigation.

USA – Recall Salsa Dill Beans – Clostridium botulinum?

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is warning consumers not to eat Harry’s Berries Salsa (mild or hot flavors) or Harry’s Berries Dilled Beans, packed by Gean Farms, Inc., because they may have been improperly produced, making them susceptible to contamination with Clostridium botulinum. No illnesses have been linked to any of the affected products at this time.
