USA – Salmonella Outbreak in Texas

The Texas State Health Department states that there are 64 confirmed cases of Salmonella food poisoning in Dalhart, most from the X10 Texas Wood Fired Grill restaurant (otherwise known as 10 in Texas). Twelve additional cases have been reported since the restaurant voluntarily closed after illnesses were reported.

165 people were confirmed to have become ill from hepatitis A after eating ‘Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend’ in 10 states: Arizona (24), California (80), Colorado (29), Hawaii (8), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (1), New Mexico (11), Nevada (6), Utah (3), and Wisconsin (2). [Note: The cases reported from Wisconsin resulted from exposure to the product in California, the cases reported from New Hampshire reported fruit exposure during travel to Nevada, and the case reported in New Jersey was a household contact of a confirmed case from Colorado.] Eight of the confirmed cases were household contacts of confirmed cases (secondary cases).

  • 91 (55%) female ill persons
  • Ages ranged from <1 – 84 years;
    • 95 (58%) of those ill were between 40 – 64 years of age.
    • 11 children age 18 or under were also ill. None were previously vaccinated.
  • Illness onset dates ranged from 3/31/2013 – 8/12/2013
  • 69 (42%) ill people were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported
  • All ill people who reported eating this product purchased it from Costco markets; however, the product was also sold at Harris Teeter stores. No ill people were identified that bought the product at Harris Teeter.

 

USA – E.coli O157 Outbreak Update

At least 122 people in Alberta have contracted E.coli O157:H7, infections during the last month, according to the Canadian Press. There are 59 confirmed cases in Calgary, 48 in Edmonton, seven in the South, six in the North and two the Central zone.

Health authorities have not yet determined the source of the outbreak. Sprouts have been mentioned as possible source. Some of the case patients who were hospitalized earlier this month told investigators they ate fresh bean sprouts prior to becoming ill.

Scotland – E.coli outbreak linked to Khushi’s Indian Restaurant in Dunfermline

An outbreak of E.coli 0157 in Fife is still being investigated by NHS Fife’s Public Health Department.

 There is a cluster of five confirmed cases, and six suspected cases, associated with Khushi’s Indian Restaurant in Dunfermline.

NHS Fife said none of the cases are in hospital, and all are recovering at home.

 

Canada . Ecoli O157 Outbreak Update

The Public Health Agency of Canada, along with its health and food safety partners, is investigating 27 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 illness; 12 in British Columbia, 10 in Alberta, 2 in Saskatchewan, 2 in Manitoba and 1 in Quebec.

These individuals became ill between mid-July and late-September.  There has been one death.

Certain contaminated cheese products manufactured by Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, have been identified as the source of the illnesses. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a Health Hazard Alert warning the public not to consume the affected product.
