CIFA – Beef Product Recall – E.coli O157

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and New Food Classics are warning the public not to consume certain Country Morning Beef Burgers, and no name Club Pack Beef Steakettes described below, because the products may be contaminated with E. coliO157:H7.

The Country Morning Beef Burgers product has been distributed to COOP and TGP grocery stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwest Territories.

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

US – Sprouting Seeds Again – E.coli O26

Food Poisoning Bulletin

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has reported a multi-state outbreak of shiga-toxin producing E. coli 026 (STEC) infections linked to raw clover sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants.

So far, 12 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of STEC 026. The case distribution is:

  • Iowa (5)
  • Missouri (3)Kansas (2)
  • Arkansas (1)
  • Wisconsin (1)

Two people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have occurred as of February 15, 2012.

Chinese Food Safety Violations – Stiff Sentances in 2011

Almost 300 people who violated Chinese food safety laws were handed sentences including life imprisonment and the death penalty in 2011, according to a Chinese news agency.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang called for harsh punishments against food-safety violations as officials removed eggs that a shopper claimed were fake in southern China’s Guangzhou city.

Li said China faces a grave situation in ensuring food supplies are kept safe and authorities should take a proactive approach to deter violations.

Sources with the State Council’s Food Safety Committee said on Thursday that a total of 286 people in more than 5,200 food safety cases last year were handed sentences, including life imprisonment and suspended death penalties.

One person has been confirmed infected with E. coli O157:H7 linked to ground beef now being recalled in Canada.
 
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and New Middleast Supermarket of Ottawa, ON are warning the public not to consume finely ground beef used for kibbeh that was sold by the stores on Dec. 28 and 29, 2011.
 
Kibbeh is a Middle Eastern dish of minced meat shaped into balls or patties.
 
The ground beef, which may still be in home freezers, was served from the supermarket’s fresh meat counter in plastic bags wrapped with paper. The packages may be unlabeled.

US – Listeria monocytogenes Recall – Chicken Salad Products

This seems to be another product which has been caught up in the Listeria monocytogenes in hard boiled eggs.

Bost Distributing Company doing business as Harold Food Company, a Bear Creek, N.C. establishment, is recalling approximately 1,200 pounds of chicken salad products. The products contain eggs that are the subject of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall due to concerns about contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Canadian CIFA Recall – E.coli O157 – Ground Beef

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and New Middleast Supermarket, 1755 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON are warning the public not to consume the finely ground beef described below because the product may be contaminated with E. coliO157:H7.

The affected ground beef is a finely ground raw beef known to be used for Kebbeh. This product was sold on December 28 and 29, 2011from the New Middleast Supermarket, 1755 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON. This product was likely served from the fresh meat counter in plastic bags wrapped with paper. The packages may not bear a label identifying store name and other information. Consumers are advised to contact the retailer if you are unsure as to whether you have the affected beef product stored in your home freezer.

There has been one confirmed illness associated with the consumption of this product.

Non – O157 Shiga Toxin Producing E.coli in Vension

We investigated an outbreak of non-O157 Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli at a high school in Minnesota, USA, in November 2010. Consuming undercooked venison and not washing hands after handling raw venison were associated with illness. E. coli O103:H2 and non-Shiga toxin–producing E. coli O145:NM were isolated from ill students and venison.

Canadian – Salmonella – Dry Sausage Recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Livno Meats are warning the public not to consume the Dry Sausage described below because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected product, Livno Meats Dry Sausage, was sold only from the Livno Meats retail store in Hornby, Ontario. It was sold in two formats as follows:

  1. Approximately 200 g vacuum package with a label bearing code “BATCH # 4, PACKED ON DE/11/28”
  2. Packaged in a plastic bag per customer order and sold during the period December 28, 2011 to January 21, 2012, inclusive.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Canadian – Listeria monocytogenes- Smoked Trout Recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Milford Bay Trout Farm Inc. are warning the public not to consume the Smoked Trout Fillet described below because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The affected product, Milford Bay Trout Farm Inc. Smoked Trout Filet, is sold refrigerated in variable weight vacuum packages, bearing Best Before dates February 9, 2012 and February 10, 2012 and lot code 30644-1. There is no UPC on the package. This product has been distributed in Ontario.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
