Ethylene oxide gas is used as a biocide (bactericide killing bacteria and their endospores), as a fungicide (killing molds and fungi).
The MRL, set at 0.05 mg / kg in EC regulation no. 396/2005, has been exceeded leading to product withdrawals in several European countries including France.
