USA – The Lennox Recalls Pig Ears For Salmonella Contamination; Dog Illnesses

The Lennox Intl Inc, in Edison, New Jersey, is recalling its Natural Pig ears dog treats because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The company is aware of two cases of their pig ears that caused dog illnesses that may be related to the Salmonella contamination the FDA is investigating in connection with a multistate outbreak. The recall notice did not state that there were any human illnesses associated with this product.

  • Since the last update on July 3, 2019, 48 ill people and three additional Salmonella serotypes have been added to this investigation. Additional Salmonella serotypes include Infantis, London, and Newport.
  • A total of 93 people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella have been reported from 27 states.
    • Twenty ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
  • Epidemiologic evidence indicates that contact with pig ear dog treats is the likely source of this outbreak.
    • In interviews, 63 (90%) of 70 ill people reported contact with a dog before getting sick.
      • Of 49 people with available information, 34 (69%) reported contact with pig ear dog treats or with dogs who were fed pig ear dog treats.

Recall

  • On July 3, 2019, Pet Supplies Plus recalledexternal icon bulk pig ears stocked in open bins because they might be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Do not feed recalled pig ears to your dog. Throw them away in a secure container so that your pets and other animals can’t eat them.
  • Even if some of the recalled pig ears were fed to your dog and no one got sick, do not continue to feed them to your dog.
    • Wash containers, shelves, and areas that held the recalled pig ear dog treats with hot, soapy water.
  • A common supplier of pig ear treats in this outbreak has not been identified. Pet owners can take steps to keep their families healthy while feeding pets.
  • This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will provide updates when more information is available.

A Salmonella enterica serotype I 4,[5],12:i:- linked to pig ear dog treats has sickened at least 45 people in 13 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Twelve people have been hospitalized because they are so sick.

The presence of salmonella in the products listed above. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The product could therefore carry a potential risk, because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals. In humans, symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. Infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhoea.

Our advice to consumers

If you have bought any of the above products do not use them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund. When handling and serving raw pet food it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils or after contact with the faeces of infected animals. Raw pet food should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces.
