India – Nearly 100 people suffer from food poisoning at community event in Udaipur

Nearly 100 people took ill on Sunday in an incident of food poisoning in Rajasthan’s Udaipur, officials said.

Block Chief Medical Officer Dr Saket Jain, after primary examination of patients, said that it looked like a matter of food poisoning.

As per reports, several people took ill and grew symptoms of food poisoning after eating at a community event, following which they were admitted to a nearby hospital and are undergoing treatment.

In a concerning incident, 42 students from a private engineering college in Tamil Nadu were hospitalised early Sunday morning due to suspected food poisoning. The students, who had consumed dinner at their hostel, began experiencing symptoms of uneasiness and vomiting shortly after the meal, according to police reports.

All affected students were promptly transported to the Erode District Medical College Hospital for treatment. Medical staff have reported that the condition of the students is stable, and they are currently under observation.

An official in the district health department said that 60 to 70 people who ate at a restaurant in the Moonnupeedika area sought treatment at various hospitals.

Health officials suspect that the consumption of mayonnaise supplied with the dish known as “kuzhimanthi” is the reason for the food poisoning.

Initial investigations into the recent cases of food poisoning reported in Riyadh found that several attempts had been made to conceal or destroy evidence, Saudi Arabia’s Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) said in a statement on Thursday.

The investigation suggested potential collusion by a small number of food inspectors who prioritized personal gain over public health and safety, the statement added.

The incident occurred at the annual temple fair of a local village in India’s Karnataka state.  Attendees who consumed prasadam – typically vegetarian food served to religious devotees after a specific service – began to report symptoms consistent with foodborne illness.

Hong Kong – 30 staff struck by food poisoning after eating at Eastern Hospital restaurants

Around 30 people have fallen victim to suspected food poisoning after eating at two restaurants inside Eastern Hospital.

The group of hospital staffers suffered abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting after consuming food from the two restaurants on Tuesday, and have all called in sick the following day.

The two restaurants have ceased operation today for disinfection. It is understood that the two restaurants were run by Asia Pacific Catering, a subsidiary of Cafe de Coral. The restaurants were not responsible for providing food to hospital patients.

A hospital staff member told reporters this morning that the food quality at the two restaurants varied with limited choice given their short lunch hours.

The staff also said the hospital has been assessing tenders of the restaurant service contracts according to the “lowest bid wins”, with the operator having already been running the restaurants for years.

The hospital said it has since notified the Centre for Health Protection and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of the incident, and has instructed hospital staff to disinfect relevant facilities.

Myanmar – Over 40 hospitalized after food poisoning in southern Myanmar

YANGON, May 21 (Xinhua) — A total of 45 people, including 11 children, have been hospitalized for food poisoning in southern Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady region, a local rescue organization official told Xinhua on Tuesday.

The victims from Labutta township of Ayeyarwady region fell ill on Monday after eating spicy egg curry, the official said.

The affected people included day laborers and their family members. The laborers received the curry at their workplace and brought it home to share with their families, he said.

Greece – Staph found in school meals linked to mass food poisoning

Strains of the staphylococcus bacteria have been detected in samples of school lunches that allegedly caused mass food poisoning among dozens of primary schoolchildren in the city of Lamia last week.

According to state broadcaster ERT, staph was identified in ten food samples sent to the regional National Public Health Organization laboratory in Thessaly.

According to the Mayo Clinic, staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of food poisoning. The bacteria multiply in food and produce toxins that make people sick. Symptoms come on quickly, usually within hours of eating contaminated food. Symptoms usually disappear quickly, too, often lasting just half a day.

104 hospitalized for food poisoning in Sierra Leone

FREETOWN, May 19 (Xinhua) — A total of 104 people have been hospitalized in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, after consuming contaminated food from a cookery shop.

According to a statement by the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex late Saturday, the 104 patients from the Mabella community, including 26 children, are all in stable condition, and no deaths have been reported.

The hospital said the patients have shown various symptoms, including vomiting, weakness, dizziness, malaise, and bloody stools, and an emergency response team was immediately activated to provide prompt and comprehensive care to those affected.

The police assisted with crowd control and the investigation of the suspected source of the contamination, which was traced to a local cookery shop, where the owner and his daughters were also affected by the incident.

Further investigation is still underway.

Vietnam – 350 workers at South Korean firm suffer food poisoning

Over 350 workers at a South Korean company in Vinh Phuc Province suffered food poisoning after eating lunch on Tuesday.

Over 3,290 workers at Shinwon Ebenezer Vietnam textile company ate lunch in two batches at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The meal, cooked at the company, comprised chicken, broccoli, legumes, and pickles.

The Vinh Phuc Department of Health has collected food samples to identify the cause of the outbreak.
