Hong Kong – Research – Salmonella in RTE Foods

7th Space Interactive

Kong (HKSAR) – The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has recently completed a targeted food surveillance project on Salmonella in ready-to-eat food. Results showed that all the 800 samples tested were satisfactory.

“The Centre collected the samples from over 600different locations, including retail outlets and food factories, for testing of Salmonella. The samples included cut fruit and salad; meat, poultry and their products (such as ham, shredded chicken, siu-mei and lo-mei); dishes containing eggs (such as pudding and fried rice with eggs); and other food (such as jellyfish and other Chinese cold dishes),” a spokesman for the CFS said today (January 20).

Salmonella is the leading cause of food poisoning locally.

Research – Clostridium difficile in Food?

Mary Ann Leibert

Spores of toxigenic Clostridium difficile and spores of food-poisoning strains of Clostridium perfringens show a similar prevalence in meats. Spores of both species are heat resistant and can survive cooking of foods. C. perfringens is a major cause of foodborne illness; studies are needed to determine whether C. difficile transmission by a similar route is a cause of infection.

USA – Co-Op City Associated with Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak in New York City

Food Poisoning Bulletin Legionella_Plate_01

Health officials have found evidence connecting cases of Legionnaires’ disease to the Co-Op City complex in the Bronx. “Although additional testing needs to be done, the association between the people with Legionnaires’ disease and Co-Op city is substantial,” said attorney Fred Pritzker. “Sometimes filing a lawsuit is the only way to get answers.

Since December 2014, 12 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been diagnosed among Bronx residents, according to the New York City Department of Health. Of these, 8 were Co-Op City residents. Health officials found Legionella bacteria in water used in the cooling towers, according to a department press release. The infected water is used to cool Co-Op City’s heating and electrical systems.

USA-CDC -Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis Infections Linked to Bean Sprouts

CDC cdc

  • Read the Advice to Consumers and Retailers
  • As of December 15, 2014, a total of 111 people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Enteritidis have been reported from 12 states.
  • Twenty-six percent of ill persons have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
  • Collaborative investigation efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory agencies indicate that bean sprouts produced by Wonton Foods, Inc. are the likely source of this outbreak.
  • In interviews, 48 (66%) of 73 ill persons reported eating bean sprouts or menu items containing bean sprouts in the week before becoming ill.
  • Wonton Foods, Inc. continues to cooperate with state and federal public health and agriculture officials.
  • On November 21, 2014, Wonton Foods Inc. agreed to destroy any remaining products while they conducted a thorough cleaning and sanitization and implemented other Salmonella control measures. On November 24, the firm completed the cleaning and sanitation and resumed production of bean sprouts. The firm resumed shipment on November 29, 2014.
  • Contaminated bean sprouts produced by Wonton Foods, Inc. are likely no longer available for purchase or consumption given the maximum 12-day shelf life of mung bean sprouts.
  • CDC recommends that consumers, restaurants, and other retailers always practice food safety for sprouts
  • Children, older adults, pregnant women, and persons with weakened immune systems should avoid eating raw sprouts of any kind (including alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts).
  • Cook sprouts thoroughly to reduce the risk of illness. Cooking sprouts thoroughly kills any harmful bacteria.
  • CDC’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) laboratory conducted antibiotic resistance testing on Salmonella Enteritidis isolates collected from three ill persons infected with the outbreak strains.
  • All three isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics tested on the NARMS panel.
  • This investigation is ongoing, and CDC will update the public when more information becomes available.

Cruise Ship Health Tips: How to Avoid Norovirus and Other Contagious Diseases on the High Seas

HNGN Eurofins

Prepare before you go aboard a cruise ship, experts warn.
Norovirus is a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus that can be caught on cruise ships.
But experts say to prepare ahead is the best way to keep your health while on vacation. Bring hand sanitizer and wash your hands frequently, according to the New York Daily News. Proper hygeiene can go a long way. Practice your balance because you will want to avoid touching handrails.
Experts say the norovirus is spread by touching elevator buttons, salt and pepper shakers and anything else that the mass population will also come in contact with on the cruise ship.

Thailand – Listeriosis-associated apple detected in Thailand

NNT

BANGKOK, 17 January 2015 (NNT) – Thai authorities have confirmed the existence of Listeriosis-associated apples imported from the United States to Thailand, advising the public to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before consumption.

The Director-General of the Department of Medical Science (DMSC) Apichai Mongkol have addressed the warning issued from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the recall of the apples from Bidart Bros. as the FDA have confirmed a contamination of Listeriosis outbreak in the apples. Health effects from the consumption or physical contact can result in death.

He has said that the FDA has issued a warning to Thailand that some of the affected produce were transported to Thailand and the neighbouring countries and might cause harm to the public.

USDA USDA

La Guadalupana Wholesale, Inc., a Chicago, Ill., establishment, is recalling approximately 8,856 pounds of chicken tamales because they were not produced under a fully implemented Ready-To-Eat (RTE) Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan; a Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) program; and a hazard analysis the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Research Articles – An Emetic Bacillus cereus Outbreak in a Kindergarten: Detection and Quantification of Critical Levels of Cereulide Toxin – Reported Foodborne Outbreaks Due to Fresh Produce in the United States and European Union: Trends and Causes

Mary Ann Leibert

A Bacillus cereus–related emetic outbreak was reported in a Belgian kindergarten. High levels of emetic B. cereus (>1.5E+07 colony-forming units/g) were detected in the food leftovers, and the presence of an emetic strain was confirmed in feces. Emetic toxin levels ranging up to 4.2 μg/g were also quantified in the leftovers by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS2) analysis. Those levels, although moderate in comparison with earlier published intoxications, provoked profuse-vomiting episodes in 20 toddlers aged between 10 and 18 months. Few studies have focused on the levels of emetic toxin implicated in food intoxications. This publication emphasizes the importance of defining toxic doses of emetic toxin among high-risk population groups.

The consumption of fruit and vegetables continues to rise in the United States and European Union due to healthy lifestyle recommendations. Meanwhile, the rate of foodborne illness caused by the consumption of these products remains high in both regions, representing a significant public health and financial issue. This study addresses the occurrence of reported foodborne outbreaks associated with fresh fruits and vegetables consumption in the United States and European Union during the period 2004–2012, where data are available. Special attention is paid to those pathogens responsible for these outbreaks, the mechanisms of contamination, and the fresh produce vehicles involved. Norovirus is shown to be responsible for most of the produce-related outbreaks, followed by Salmonella. Norovirus is mainly linked with the consumption of salad in the United States and of berries in the European Union, as demonstrated by the Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). Salmonella was the leading cause of multistate produce outbreaks in the United States and was the pathogen involved in the majority of sprouts-associated outbreaks. As is reflected in the MCA, the pattern of fresh produce outbreaks differed in the United States and European Union by the type of microorganism and the food vehicle involved.
