Research -Disarming a pathogen’s ability to cause disease

mBiosphere

The anaerobic, Gram-positive Clostridium difficile is a big problem. It causes rampant diarrhea and tissue necrosis, with more than 150,000 annual cases in the United States alone. Many of the disease manifestations of C. difficile are mediated by two exotoxins that C. difficile produces: TcdA and TcdB. Researchers have long been working at toxin inhibition as an approach to disarm C. difficile and improve treatment, and new research in Clinical and Vaccine Immunology shows promise in blocking toxin activity in vivo.

UK -NHS hospital sandwiches can kill you: Top scientists blames patients’ food for cases of lethal listeria infection

Daily Mail

Hospitals are risking patients’ lives by serving them sandwiches contaminated with a lethal bug, say experts in a shocking report.

The danger comes in pre-packed sandwiches, a popular menu option with many patients – and one that NHS managers like because they are cheap and easy to serve.

But food safety advisers are warning that they can contain the deadly bug listeria, which can trigger meningitis. It also kills up to 30 per cent of those it infects.

UK – Bagged Salads – E.coli O157

Daily Mail

Children are among scores of victims taken ill after eating rocket leaves infected with a deadly strain of E.coli in an outbreak that has already claimed two lives, it emerged last night.

More than 150 people across Britain have been affected by the bug, which is being linked with rocket imported from Mediterranean countries.

The outbreak has now left more than 60 patients needing hospital treatment.

BBC

People in the UK have been advised to thoroughly wash mixed salad leaves amid concern that this food could be the source of a recent E. coli outbreak. The bug has affected more than 150 people and killed two.

Public Health England advises people to remove any loose soil before storing vegetables, and wash all vegetables and salads thoroughly that will be eaten raw unless they have been pre-prepared and are specifically labelled “ready to eat”.

Health officials admit that washing foods is not 100% fail-safe, but it gives people the best chance against infection.
