USA -E. coli Outbreak at Pho 75 Vietnamese Restaurant

Colorado press reports that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are investigating an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 in Aurora. The outbreak was reported at Pho 75, an Aurora restaurant located at 2050 South Havana Street.

So far, four ill people have been identified, but as with any outbreak, it is possible that there are more sick than reported, as some might not go to the doctor. One of the four ill was hospitalized.

The Nuts About Berries Paleo Bar contains sunflower seeds that were recalled by our supplier, SunOpta, due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Post Consumer Brands is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of its Great Grains Protein Blend – Honey, Oats & Seeds cereal because it contains sunflower seeds that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The sunflower seeds were obtained from a supplier, SunOpta, which recalled its ingredient.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported to date, but Post Consumer Brands is recalling the products out of an abundance of caution.

Taylors Candy is recalling Stuckey’s bags of sunflower kernels because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. These products were distributed to retail stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The sunflower seeds came from SunOpta, which has issued several recalls. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis can take up to 70 days to appear.

 

USA -FDA finds outbreak strain of E. coli O126 in General Mills flour

Federal officials have matched E. coli O121 from a sample of General Mills flour recovered from a sick person’s home to the outbreak strain that has sickened at least 38 people since December.

The discovery is the smoking gun investigators have been looking for since late April when patient interviews revealed that raw dough made with flour was a common denominator among outbreak victims.

USA -Alejandro’s Taqueria Tied to Campylobacter Outbreak

According to news reports, the Solano County Public Health and Environment is investigating a campylobacteriosis outbreak connected with a restaurant in Fairfield. The restaurant is Alejandro’s Taqueria on Texas Street in Fairfield. 32 Campylobacter cases have been reported this month. The affected people ate at the restaurant between May 26 and May 29, health officials said. Officials closed the restaurant on June 8.

Campylobacteriosis is an acute gastrointestinal illness characterized by watery and/or bloody stool caused by ingestion of the microorganism Campylobacter jejuni or Campylobacter coli. Cases are most often reported as being associated with ingestion of contaminated food (particularly poultry), drinking contaminated water or milk and contact with infected animals (especially puppies and kittens). Although uncommon, person to person transmission can occur through fecal-oral route.

USA -Salmonella and STEC E.coli – Kings County

Public Health is investigating a cluster of three E. coli infections caused by Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (also called STEC) among young children in King County. Public Health received the first report of illness on 5/26/16, the second report on 6/1/16, and the third on 6/6/16. All the children are under 5 years of age and developed symptoms including diarrhea that became bloody and abdominal cramps. Two children have been hospitalized with complications including a type of kidney injury called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The third child was not hospitalized and is recovering at home.

Public Health recently investigated an outbreak of salmonellosis (caused by Salmonella bacteria) associated with a private event that occurred in late March. Three laboratory-confirmed and five probable cases of salmonellosis were reported and interviewed by Public Health; one person required hospitalization.

Several foods for the event, attended by roughly 200 people, were prepared in a private kitchen where cross-contamination, insufficient cooking, and inadequate refrigeration may have occurred and resulted in bacterial contamination of one or more food items served at the event. No single food item was identified as the definitive source of illness. Public Health Environmental Health staff helped provide educational information on safe food handling practices, as well as guidance on how to become a licensed caterer in the county.
