UK – Pub Chef and Manager Jailed – Food Illness Death

A pub chef and manager have been jailed after a woman who ate a Christmas meal they served died from food poisoning.

Della Callagher, 46, died after eating at the Railway Hotel in Hornchurch, east London in December 2012.

Chef Mehmet Kaya and Ann-Marie McSweeney were found guilty of perverting the course of justice and jailed at Snaresbrook Crown Court for 12 and 18 months respectively.

They had fabricated food safety records relating to the cooking of turkey meat.

Mitchells and Butlers (M&B), the chain which owned the pub, was fined £1.5m for placing unsafe food on the market

In yet another case of food poisoning due to midday meals, 23 schoolchildren, all 13-year-olds were admitted to Sion hospital on Tuesday. The incident occurred at 3.40pm in Dayanand Balak Vidyalaya, Matunga East.

The children were admitted for observation after at least six started vomitting and got loose motions.

USA – Chuck E. Cheese – Norovirus

A norovirus outbreak has sickened at least 30 people who visited a Chuck E. Cheese in Woodbury, MN last week. The restaurant closed for a cleaning in Tuesday evening and reopened Wednesday afternoon.

Symptoms of a norovirus infection are vomiting and diarrhea. No hospitalizations have been reported. It is not clear how many of those sickened were children.

Petco has become the first national pet specialty retailer to end sales of pet treats made in China. The decision was prompted by continuing reports of illness and deaths associated with the products.

The Outbreak: According to the CDC and Canadian Public Health, as of December 24, 2014, 31 people in 10 states and two provinces have been reported as being infected with the outbreak strains of Listeria monocytogenes. The CDC reports that 29 ill people have been hospitalized. Listeriosis contributed to at least five of the deaths. Nine illnesses were pregnancy-related. Four illnesses were among otherwise healthy children ages 5 – 15 years.

The Number Ill and Dead: Illnesses have been reported in Arizona (4), California (1), Minnesota (4), Missouri (5), New Mexico (5), North Carolina (1), Texas (4), Utah (1), Washington (1), Wisconsin (3) and in Ontario (1) and Manitoba (1), Canada.

The Recall: From an FDA Christmas Eve Recall Notice: Happy Apples, is issuing a voluntary recall of Happy Apple Brand caramel apples with a best use by date between August 25th and November 23rd 2014, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Happy Apple caramel apples are sold in single pack, three packs, four packs and eight packs and each package will have a best use by date on the front of the label. They were available for retail sale through grocery, discount and club stores, generally in the produce section and were distributed to retailers in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin.

California Snack Foods, is issuing a voluntary recall of California Snack Foods brand caramel apples with a best use by date between August 15th and November 28th 2014, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeriainfection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Listeria in caramel apples has left three children between the ages of 5 and 15 with Listeria meningitis. This, often fatal, form of meningitis normally develops in infants.

The number of people in New Mexico infected by Listeria from caramel apples could be more than five, a number that only one other state has matched in the ongoing state and federal investigation of a deadly listeriosis outbreak. The New Mexico Department of Health said work is ongoing to identify additional cases in the state. So far, more than one New Mexico baby has been diagnosed with Listeria while other case patients range in age up to 42. “These cases reside in Bernalillo, McKinley, and Lea counties and became ill in October and November,” according to a caramel apple Listeria health alert from the department. “All were hospitalized and are recovering.”

The caramel apple Listeria outbreak has targeted pregnant women and their newborn babies who account for almost one third of the cases reported so far. Nine of 28 cases currently reported are related to pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Three of New Mexico’s five cases are newborn boys who developed infections in the womb after their mothers ate contaminated caramel apples.

Friday the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (“CDPHE”) and several Denver metropolitan area public health departments released a report of their investigation of an outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) that occurred in October 2013 at Denver Jimmy John’s restaurants.

There are two Salmonella strains involved in the outbreak linked to contaminated bean sprouts that has sickened 87 people in 11 states. And both of them are rare, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To solve and track this outbreak, public health investigators are using PulseNet, a national subtyping network of public health agencies that is coordinated by CDC.

A bean sprout Salmonella outbreak has sickened 87 people in 11 states, according to the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Twenty seven percent of those sickened have been hospitalized.

The outbreak has been linked to Wonton Foods Inc. of Brooklyn, which suspended production briefly to clean its facility and resumed production on November 29. Health officials says it’s likely that the contaminated sprouts are no longer in circulation as the maximum shelf life of mung bean sprouts is 12 days.

The Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite found in raw or undercooked meat, can latch on to pregnant moms and their unborn babies if ingested, potentially causing food poisoning, miscarriage or other complications to the unborn baby.

According to microbiologist Dr. Windell Rivera, “Usually infected newborns would have problems sa mata, sa utak, mga damage talaga at birth (Usually, infected newborns would have eye or brain damages at birth).”

Toxoplasmosis is the disease caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite. Naturally thriving in a cat’s stomach, it can contaminate soil, water, or plant material once released via the animal’s feces. Animals that ingest the parasite can be infected. Humans may contract the parasite by consuming contaminated meat products.
