Europe – Increase in ciguatera fish poisoning cases in Europe

PHYSORG

The substance ciguatoxin is only found in fish from tropical and subtropical seas. For some years now, cases of ciguatera have been reported with increasing frequency in Europe, in particular on the Spanish and Portuguese islands in the Atlantic but also in Germany. New information indicates that these toxins are increasingly prevalent in the Mediterranean. The global trade of imported fish is another reason for the increasing occurrence of ciguatoxin poisoning in Europe. “Fish should be a regular part of the diet”, says BfR-President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel. “Ciguatera is a very rare form of fish poisoning in Germany. The reported cases have been caused by the consumption of contaminated tropical predatory fish such as various snapper species.” These include Lutjanus bohar (two-spot red snapper), Lutjanus argentimaculatus, Lutjanus erythropterus (crimson snapper) or Pinjalo pinjalo.

EFSA

A cooperation project on ciguatoxin food poisoning involving 13 organisations from six Member States and EFSA is taking shape. Representatives of Spain and EFSA signed a Framework Partnership Agreement on 19 April 2016 to carry out a four-year project on risk characterisation of ciguatera food poisoning in Europe.

Ciguatoxin is found in fish that feed on a microorganism that produces the toxic substance. Consumers eating affected fish can suffer from a range of symptoms including gastrointestinal and neurological effects.

Since 2008, Spain and Portugal have reported outbreaks of ciguatoxin food poisoning in the Canary Islands and Madeira. New findings suggest the microorganism is becoming more widespread in the Mediterranean.

A Brisbane seafood restaurant that gave 29 people food poisoning, including an elite athlete who had to be hospitalised for three days, has been fined $37,000.

Two dodgy batches of mayonnaise were made by the head chef at the South Bank Surf Club in 2015, with Brisbane Magistrates Court hearing they were contaminated with salmonella likely transferred from eggshells.

It was alleged that diners ordering fish and chips, burgers and pork sandwiches were given aioli that had been left out on a kitchen bench away from a refrigerator.

Lawyers for the restaurant on Thursday entered guilty pleas to 22 charges of serving unsafe food over eight days.

USA – Altamonte Springs Daycare Linked to Shigella Outbreak

Shigella blog Shigella - kswfoodworld

Florida health officials in Seminole County are warning about a shigella outbreak at a daycare. A shigella outbreak was reported to Florida Health Department officials on Tuesday at the Kids City USA daycare in Altamonte Springs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms appear one to two day after exposure, with diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. CDC said symptoms last five to seven days; however, people with mild cases may only need fluids and plenty of rest. In severe cases, antibiotics may be used. However, shigella is antibiotic-resistant. The bacteria is highly contagious, CDC officials said. A tiny amount of exposure to contaminated stool can cause infection. Health officials said the daycare is still open. CDC recommends that if an outbreak occurs at a daycare, to have a child who is infected with diarrhea to stay home and children who have recently recovered to be placed in one classroom to minimize the risk of exposure. Also, staff should be assigned to change diapers and prepare the food, the CDC said. Young children and travelers are among the most at-risk groups of being affected.
