UK – Changes to the Campylobacter Retail Survey

FSA

Changes to the campylobacter retail survey

Following discussions with the industry on an FSA initiative, the top nine retailers have agreed to publish their own campylobacter results on their consumer websites. The sampling and analyses carried out by the retailers will be in accordance with robust protocols established by the FSA that will also ensure that their published results are comparable. In addition, the FSA will have access to the raw data from each retailer in order to verify the samples and to determine industry averages, and we reserve the right to comment publically on the results. Each retailer has committed in writing to follow the protocol. As a result of this arrangement, the nine major retailers will not now be included in our annual survey but consumers will be able to follow the retailers’ ongoing commitment to campylobacter reduction.

In light of the significant progress made by the major retailers and producers in taking action to reduce campylobacter levels in their chicken, our strategy is now to focus effort on smaller establishments where we feel further improvements could be made.

The increased focus on these suppliers will allow the improvements made by the larger chains to be extended across the whole supply chain. The focus for the fourth year of the retail survey will therefore be on smaller retailers, independent traders and market stalls as these are more likely to be supplied by smaller processors.

We will now move to encouraging and working with smaller processors who generally have not made the same level of improvements to their processing lines as the bigger chains. Although these plants account for a smaller share of the market, many supply products into catering and local retailers. We remain committed to reducing the levels of campylobacter on all UK produced chickens, and we will be monitoring the larger retailers’ results very closely to ensure they continue to show action is being taken to tackle campylobacter.

Death Wish Coffee is recalling its 11 ounce Data Wish Nitro Brew cans because they may be contaminated with botulism toxin. In low acid canned foods, this bacteria can grow and produce the toxin.

The symptoms of botulism poisoning include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking, and difficulty swallowing. Constipation, abdominal dissension, difficulty in breathing, and weakness of other muscles are also common symptoms.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

USA – E.coli Outbreak – 8 Sickened – Wisconsin

Food Poisoning Bulletin Ecoli Istock

An E. coli outbreak has sickened at least eight people in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and hospitalized six children. The La Crosse County Health Department is investigating the outbreak, according to the La Crosse Tribune.

Some of the children have recovered and have been released from the hospital. The bacteria that made them sick is E. coli O157. And they were hospitalized because they developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a complication of an E. coli infection that can cause kidney failure, strokes, seizures, and death. This type of bacteria releases shiga toxins, which travel through the bloodstream and kill red blood cells. Those dead and damaged cells can then clog the kidneys, causing them to fail.

At least 15 people including men, women and children of Moo-le-paw, Nongjngi village were admitted to Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital and Nartiang PHC after they fell ill due to suspected food poisoning.
The headman of the village, Proson Kam said “My sister gave birth to a baby and as per our customary practice we had organised a family feast on Friday. We invited our relatives and friends, however, some of the invitees started feeling sick on Saturday morning.”
When asked if the cause of the unknown sickness was pork meat, he said no. “We never vaccinate our pigs or cows. I strongly suspect that it is due to the chicken and chemically grown vegetables,” he added.
The headman further informed on Sunday, he rushed 14 victims to Jowai District Civil Hospital, Ialong, but on reaching there they were taken aback by the attitude of the medical staff. “The doctor on duty along with his staff paid no heed instead forced us to go to Mission Hospital (i.e. Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital) a hospital runs by Presbyterian mission,” Kam said.
“Why we are always forced to go to a private hospital without being diagnosed and even without providing first aid at the government hospital”, questioned a young man who was present with the headman.
