Food Poisoning Journal

Norovirus was to blame for a food-borne illness outbreak last month that sickened nearly 100 customers and employees at Chipotle Mexican Grill in Simi Valley. Seven of the 18 employees who got sick have tested positive for Norovirus, county health officials said Thursday.

The Ventura County Environmental Health Division began investigating after receiving numerous complaints of food poisoning from people who ate Aug. 18-19 at the Chipotle at 1263 Simi Town Center Way. About 80 customers and 18 employees reported symptoms, health officials said.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) have identified tomatoes as the source of the Salmonella Newport outbreak that has sickened dozens of people who ate at Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota since late August. Investigators are working with state and federal partners to trace the tomatoes back to the farm of origin.

Since the outbreak was reported last week, additional illnesses have been confirmed by MDH.  A total of 64 cases and 22 locations now have been linked to the outbreak [locations are listed below]. Nine people have been hospitalized; all are recovering. Meal dates for the cases range from August 16 to August 28 and people became ill between August 19 and September 3. The cases range in age from 10 to 69 years and are from 13 metro counties and several greater Minnesota counties.

The investigation into an outbreak of E. coli O26 illnesses that may be related to Chipotle restaurants in Washington and Oregon has grown from 19 reported Washington cases to 25 as of today. The Washington State Department of Health continues working closely with local, state, and federal partners on a disease investigation to learn the extent of the outbreak and possible sources of E. coli O26 bacteria.

Food Poisoning Bulletin

The FDA and the CDC have joined the investigation into the Chipotle E. coli outbreak that has sickened at least 22 people who ate at locations in Washington and Oregon. The illnesses have been associated with meals served between October 14 and October 23 at restaurants in four Washington counties and two Oregon counties. Eight people have been hospitalized.

Food Poisoning Bulletin

The Chipotle E.coli outbreak now includes 25 cases in Washington and has spread to a fifth county in that state.  Six new cases have been added since the outbreak was first announced on October 31. There are also 12 cases in Oregon.

The Washington State Department of Health  is working with federal an local agencies on an investigation of the outbreak. They believe tainted produce may be behind the outbreak, but have not yet narrowed down the specific source.

UK – FSA – Food Law Prosecutions

FSA

The Food Standards Agency’s food law prosecution outcomes database is a public register of successful food standards, food hygiene and food safety related prosecutions obtained by the FSA and local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The objective is primarily to knowledge-share among enforcement authorities but it is also for the benefit of consumers. The FSA will regularly update the content of the database, but will ensure that cases that may be subject to appeal are not published before the outcome of the appeal, by allowing 28 days after the date of conviction before a case is added to this database. –

USA – CDC – 60 likely sickened in E. coli outbreak at Lynden fairgrounds

The Bellingham Herald

LYNDEN

A total of 60 people likely were sickened during an E. coli outbreak at the Milk Makers Fest in April, according to a report issued Friday, Oct. 30, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 1,325 Whatcom County first-grade students, plus the teachers and parents who accompanied them, from all school districts in Whatcom County went to the annual event April 21-23 at the Northwest Washington Fairgrounds in Lynden.

The event was designed to introduce young students to farming. It also gave them a chance to pet farm animals, including small horses, sheep, rabbits, chickens and a calf. There was a hay maze and scavenger hunt as well.

People who helped set up and take down the event — on April 20 and April 24 — also were among those who were sickened.

UK – Third Dorset child hospitalised with E. coli O55 infection

BBC News

A third child is being treated in hospital for serious kidney problems following an E. coli infection in Dorset.

Public Health England (PHE) said tests had shown it was the same strain of E. coli O55 that had affected 26 other people in the county.

In May, two children were also admitted to hospital with haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), the most common cause of acute kidney injury in children .

No common source has been identified.

UK – Cyclospora infection linked to travel to Mexico

Health Protection Scotland

On 14 July 2015, Health Protection Scotland (HPS) identified an unusual increase in Cyclospora infections in travellers to Mexico. National and international partners were informed and upon further investigation, a total of 176 cases were identified in England, Scotland, Wales and Canada. An outbreak control team managed the investigation in the UK. UK patients were interviewed about travel history, food consumption, clinical symptoms and demography using a questionnaire.

The UK and Canadian cases occurred in people returning from at least 36 hotels on the Riviera Maya coast of Mexico. Drinking water was considered an unlikely source as several different water networks supply the resorts (some hotels have their own borehole and treatment). Geographical and temporal associations suggested that the outbreak was related to a consumed product(s) distributed throughout the region rather than hygiene deficiencies in individual hotels. A multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis has also occurred in the US, concurrent with these investigations, in which fresh cilantro (or coriander) from Puebla, Mexico has been implicated as the cause of cluster-associated cases in three US states. Local investigation in Mexico suggests fresh cilantro from Puebla had been distributed to hotels in the Riviera Maya region. Food safety control measures have since been implemented by the Mexican authorities to ensure the safety of cilantro from Puebla state.

A detailed account of these investigations appears in the current issue of Eurosurveillance at http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleId=21284

Research – Research elucidates genetics behind Salmonella’s host specificity

Science Daily

Now, research by a team led by University of Pennsylvania scientists has shown, using genomic techniques, that slight variations in the coding sequence of proteins that bind Salmonella to host cells can determine what type of animal a particular strain infects.

The work appears in Nature Communications.

“In Salmonella, we knew that many serovars are specific to one host; we didn’t know why, but we knew that they are,” said Dieter Schifferli, senior author on the paper and a professor of microbiology in Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine. “In this work, we found strong associations between different serovars’ adhesin molecules and their preferred hosts, relationships that we then confirmed with work in the lab.”
