About this initiative

Summary

This initiative aims to align EU rules with international ‘Codex alimentarius’ standards on the acceptable level of contamination by Listeria monocytogenes of certain categories of ready-to eat food sold on the EU market.

The main objective is to protect consumers’ health while facilitating official controls carried out by the competent authorities in EU countries.

  1. The Industry Listeria Group (European + UK trade associations, UK FBOs and retailers) has been working on this since May 2021 and has a common position which will be shared soon.

    There is nothing wrong with the legislation as it stands, as shown by the much lower than EU average listeriosis rates in Ireland and the UK. IT JUST NEEDS TO BE ENFORCED!
