Information -Why You’re Noticing More Ice Cream Recalls These Days

Huffington Post

So far this year, 11 ice cream manufacturers have recalled products over concern that the dangerous Listeria monocytogenes bacterium, commonly known as listeria, may have contaminated the food.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections called listeriosis in the young, elderly or those with a weakened immune system. Listeriosis can also cause pregnant women to have miscarriages or stillbirths, which seems like a particularly cruel risk for pregnant women craving a scoop or two.

But is there actually a growing listeria problem? Or are we merely getting better at detecting the bacterium in our food?

Canada – Updated Food Recall Warning – Bean Soup and Spicy Pumpkin Chili manufactured by Hinty’s recalled due to potential presence of dangerous bacteria – Clostridium botulinum

CFIA closta

Ottawa, November 13, 2016 – The food recall warning issued on November 9, 2016 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

Hinty’s is recalling Bean Soup and Spicy Pumpkin Chili from the marketplace because they may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum. Consumers should not consume the recalled products described below.

Recalled products

Brand Name Common Name Size Code(s) on Product UPC

What you should do

If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.

Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred or double vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Background

This recall was triggered by test results. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.

Illnesses

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

USA -Latest on Tropical Smoothie Cafe Hepatitis A Outbreak

Food Poisoning Journal Hepatitis A kswfoodworld

Several states, CDC, and the FDA investigated a multistate outbreak of foodborne hepatitis A. Epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicate frozen strawberries imported from Egypt are the likely source of this outbreak.

In interviews, nearly all ill people interviewed reported drinking smoothies containing strawberries at Tropical Smoothie Café locations prior to August 8 in a limited geographical area, including Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, but there have been a small number of cases outside of that geographic area with no Tropical Smoothie Café exposure.

USA-Latest Update on Hawaii Scallops Hepatitis A Outbreak

Food Poisoning Journal

On August 15, 2016, the Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) identified raw scallops served at Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai as a likely source of the ongoing outbreak. The product of concern is Sea Port Bay Scallops (Wild Harvest, Raw Frozen) that originated in the Philippines (states “Product of the Philippines” on the box), distributed by Koha Oriental Foods.  As a result, HDOH ordered this product embargoed (not to be sold, purchased, or consumed) throughout the state, and the temporary closure of all Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai.

USA -Miami cheese company owner draws 15-month prison term -Listeria monocytogenes

Food Safety News

The owner of Miami-based cheese company Oasis Brands Inc. is the most recent company executive to be sentenced for criminal violations related to pathogen-contaminated food linked to a deadly outbreak.

U.S. District Judge Robert N. Scola Jr. sentenced Christian Rivas on Monday to serve a total of 15 months in federal prison. Rivas negotiated a plea agreement in recent weeks, admitting he intentionally sold cheese he knew was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes after he promised federal authorities he would cease distribution.

Rivas joins other food industry executives sentenced to federal prison on criminal counts related to outbreaks. Those cases include:

  • Austin “Jack” DeCoster and his son Peter DeCoster sentenced in the Quality Egg case related to a 2010 Salmonella outbreak; and
  • Stewart Parnell and his brother Michael Parnell, along with Mary Wilkerson, sentenced in the Peanut Corporation of America case related to an E. coli outbreak.
