In summer it’s natural to make the most of the fine weather by tucking into salads and firing up the barbecue .
But with such pleasures come risks.
We all know to be cautious of raw meat, but a deadly E. coli outbreak in the UK earlier this month appears to have been caused by humble salad leaves – most likely contaminated rocket imported from the Mediterranean.
Public Health England (PHE) says that so far 160 cases of E. coli have been identified, with more than 60 patients needing hospital care and, tragically, two dying.
