Research – Oat Breakfast Cereals May Contain a Common Mould-Related Toxin

Oats are often touted for boosting heart health, but scientists warn that the grain and its products might need closer monitoring for potential mold contamination. They report that some oat-based breakfast cereals in the US contain a mold-related toxin called ochratoxin A that’s been linked to kidney cancer in animal studies.

Fairway “Like No Other Market” of New York is recalling raw hazelnuts (filberts) because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recalled product, Fairway brand Raw Hazelnuts (Filberts) was distributed to Fairway stores in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. It was also sold to the public through home delivery programs by Google and Instacart. It is packaged in clear, plastic cello bags of varying weights. Each package weighs less than one pound. It has the item code 228119 XXXXXX. All “sell by” date codes of May 15, 2015 and earlier are recalled.

Lady York Foods is recalling sliced Mortadella, product of Italy, sold on February 11, 2015 from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Consumers should not consume the recalled products.

If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

The following products were sold from Lady York Foods, 2939 Dufferin St., North York, Ontario.

This recall applies to Italian Mortadella products sliced and sold from the deli counter at Lady York Foods on February 11, 2015. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the affected products are advised to contact the retailer.

The food recall warning issued earlier today has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the ongoing food borne illness outbreak investigation in Ontario.

Lady York Foods is recalling San Danielle Mortadella – Regular or Lean sold on February 18, 2015 from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Consumers should not consume the recalled product described below.

If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

The following product was sold from Lady York Foods, 2939 Dufferin St., North York, Ontario.

This recall applies to San Danielle Spicy Mortadella sliced and sold from the deli counter at Lady York Foods on February 18, 2015 but labelled as “San Danielle Mortadella – Regular or Lean”. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the affected product are advised to contact the retailer.

Research – Reusable Plastic Produce Containers Harbor Bacteria Even After Being Cleaned, Sanitised

Reusable plastic containers used to transport large amounts of fruits and vegetables to grocery stores can continue to harbour potentially harmful bacteria directly on their surfaces, even after undergoing industry-standard cleaning and sanitizing, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Arkansas and WBA Analytical Laboratories.

The study took a microscopically close look at the materials used to make the reusable plastic containers (RPCs) that have gained a foothold in the grocery industry in recent years as a preferred method of transporting produce.

Dairy products were the most common source of Listeria outbreaks that occurred between 1998 and 2012, according to a new federal study by the Food Safety Analytics Collaboration of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The study was conducted to provide information that can be used to develop better food poisoning prevention measures.

Of the 952 outbreaks attributed to one pathogen during the 14-year study period, 24 were Listeria outbreaks. Dairy products were the source of half them. Turkey was the source of four; pork and sprouts each caused two; and beef, chicken, fruit and row crop vegetables each caused one. The fruit outbreak, the cantaloupe Listeria outbreak of 2011, sickened 147 people and killed 35.

Australia – New South Wales – Salmonella Outbreak

Authorities have warned a deadly salmonella outbreak at aged care facilities across the New South Wales Illawarra may not be over, as they wait for confirmation of more cases.

As of Tuesday, the salmonella outbreak across southern NSW and the ACT has affected 27 people since February 11.

Two people from Illawarra aged care facilities died after being transferred to hospital.

The director of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Health District’s Public Health Unit, Curtis Gregory, said the unit was interviewing patients and staff, and doing tests to track the source.

He said while the spread of the outbreak had slowed, it was unlikely to be over yet.

At least 15 people have become ill after contracting a virus from the children’s play area of a Tauranga ten pin bowling venue.

Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service medical officer of health Dr Jim Miller said, in a written statement, the service had been notified of cases of norovirus gastroenteritis in at least nine preschool and primary aged children and six adults earlier this month.

He confirmed those affected had picked up the bug from the children’s play area of a Tauranga ten pin bowling venue.

About 120 tourists in a central Taiwan tourist spot known for its cherry blossoms reported a diarrhea and vomiting outbreak Monday, which health officials said could be a result of norovirus infection.

Both tourists and staff of the Hoya Resort Hotel Wuling in the Wuling Farm reported norovirus symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, according to the Taichung City Health Bureau.
