Probiotic Pill – Decrease Listeriosis ?

Food Safety News

Probiotics, the microorganisms in yogurt and other fermented foods that are known as beneficial bacteria, could be modified to stop Listeria cells from passing through intestinal walls and into the bloodstream, according to Purdue University scientists.
Listeria binds to intestinal cells using an adhesion protein and passes into them, “acting as a sort of gateway to the bloodstream,”
By adding the Listeria adhesion protein to the probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei, they were able to decrease the number of Listeria cells that passed through intestinal cells by nearly half — 46 percent — a significant decrease in the amount of the bacteria that could infect a susceptible person.

  1. Hi There Kswfoodworld,
Neat Post, I have been taking a daily probiotic dietary supplement (Solaray’s Acidophilus) for about 3 months with good results. The directions say to take “with a meal or glass of water”. I usually take it 1st thing in the morning with a glass of water. I was wondering if drinking expressio coffee within a few minutes would diminish the effect of the probiotics somehow? I was thinking that the hot liquid combined with acid in the expressio would somehow kill the bacteria upon contact …

I am almost off drinking the expressio completely, but there are still a couple of days a week where I wake up with less sleep than necessary, and feel the need to crank up the stove top expressio maker. THANKS 🙂
I’ll be back to read more next time

    • Hi Amy

Difficult to really know when you talk about hot coffee its not boling i would think its probably below 46 DegC when you drink it. Pasturisation temperatures for bacteria are around 65 DegC. Building up hurdles to stop bacteria growing such as acidity and temperature can work but it is often very specific to the types of bacteria.
