USA – CA Issues Public Health Warning About Raw Milk

The state with the largest retail sales of raw milk in the United States is warning consumers that the consumption of unpasteurized (raw) dairy products may cause serious illness.

The warning from Dr. Karen Smith, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and State Health Officer, was issued because six Northern California residents have recently been diagnosed with campylobacteriosis, a bacterial infection that can come from consuming contaminated raw milk.

A recent investigation conducted by CDPH identified multiple bottles of Claravale Farm raw milk that tested positive for Campylobacter. Under the direction of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), Claravale Farm initiated a recall of the affected product.

Research – Drinking Raw Milk Dramatically Increases Risk for Foodborne Illness

An analysis conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) found that the risks of drinking raw (unpasteurized) cow’s milk are significant. Consumers are nearly 100 times more likely to get foodborne illness from drinking raw milk than they are from drinking pasteurized milk. In fact, the researchers determined that raw milk was associated with over half of all milk-related foodborne illness, even though only an estimated 3.5% of the U.S. population consumes raw milk.

A new report published by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) shows that raw milk could cause food poisoning.

According to the results of a FSAI microbiological test, samples of raw milk contained rates of Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter at rates of 7% of 3% respectively. Detection rates in milk filter samples were higher at 20% and 22% respectively.

Salmonella was found in 1% of raw milk filters and 0.5% of raw milk samples. E. coli was discovered in 6% of raw milk filter samples.

What is this study about?

  • This study reviewed outbreaks caused raw milk–milk that has not been pasteurized to kill disease-causing germs –in the United States that were reported to CDC from 2007-2012.
  • The study analyzed the number of outbreaks, the legal status of raw milk sales in each state, and the number of illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths associated with these outbreaks.

What did the study show?

The number of outbreaks caused by raw milk has increased.

  • From 2007-2012, 26 states reported 81 outbreaks caused by raw milk to CDC. These outbreaks caused 979 illnesses and 73 hospitalizations.
    • From 2007-2009, 30 outbreaks were linked to raw milk. This increased to 51 outbreaks from 2010-2012.
  • Among outbreaks in which the food causing the outbreak was identified, the percentage caused by raw milk increased from 2% in 2007-2009 to 5% in 2010-2012.
  • Three germs caused most raw milk outbreaks from 2007-2012:
  • The average number of outbreaks caused by raw milk each year was 4 times higher from 2007-2012 than from 1993-2006.

 

USA Recall – Raw Milk – Campylobacter

Raw milk from Apple Valley Creamery in East Berlin, Pennsylvania has been recalled for Campylobacter contamination, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The samples taken January 8, 2015 tested positive for the pathogenic bacteria.

If you purchased this milk, discard it immediately and do not drink it. The milk is sold at an on-farm retail store and through home delivery. Stores in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry also carry the creamery’s products. The raw milk is sold under the Apple Valley Creamery label in half gallon and quart glass containers with sell-by dates of February 9 and February 11, 2015. The dairy cannot sell any more raw milk until health department officials clear the facility.

Raw milk can carry harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness. Implementing current good hygiene practices at farms is essential to reduce raw milk contamination, while maintaining the cold chain is also important to prevent or slow the growth of bacteria in raw milk. However, these practices alone do not eliminate these risks. Boiling raw milk before consumption is the best way to kill many of the bacteria that can make people sick.

Consumer interest in drinking raw milk has been growing in the European Union (EU) as many people believe it has health benefits. Under EU hygiene rules, Member States can prohibit or restrict the placing on the market of raw milk intended for human consumption. Sale of raw drinking milk through vending machines is permitted in some Member States, but consumers are usually instructed to boil the milk before consumption.

In their scientific opinion on public health risks associated with raw milk in the EU, experts from EFSA’s Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ) conclude that raw milk can be a source of harmful bacteria – mainly Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Two quantitative risk assessment (RA) models were developed to describe the risk of salmonellosis and listeriosis linked to consumption of raw milk sold in vending machines in Italy. Exposure assessment considered the official microbiological records monitoring raw milk samples from vending machines performed by the regional veterinary authorities from 2008 to 2011, microbial growth during storage, destruction experiments, consumption frequency of raw milk, serving size, and consumption preference. Two separate RA models were developed: one for the consumption of boiled milk and the other for the consumption of raw milk. The RA models predicted no human listeriosis cases per year either in the best or worst storage conditions and with or without boiling raw milk, whereas the annual estimated cases of salmonellosis depend on the dose-response relationships used in the model, the milk storage conditions, and consumer behavior in relation to boiling raw milk or not. For example, the estimated salmonellosis cases ranged from no expected cases, assuming that the entire population boiled milk before consumption, to a maximum of 980,128 cases, assuming that the entire population drank raw milk without boiling, in the worst milk storage conditions, and with the lowest dose-response model. The findings of this study clearly show how consumer behavior could affect the probability and number of salmonellosis cases and in general, the risk of illness. Hence, the proposed RA models emphasize yet again that boiling milk before drinking is a simple yet effective tool to protect consumers against the risk of illness inherent in the consumption of raw milk. The models may also offer risk managers a useful tool to identify or implement appropriate measures to control the risk of acquiring foodborne pathogens. Quantification of the risks associated with raw milk consumption is necessary from a public health perspective.

Outbreaks of Campylobacter infection in Utah have been linked to raw milk consumption 14 times in the past five years, sickening more than 200 people. The largest of those outbreaks began in May of this year and was announced one week ago when the Utah Deparment of Agriculture and Food announced that it had suspended the Raw Milk for Retail distribution permit held by Ogden’s Ropelato Dairy. As of August 26, state health officials had traced 45 illnesses to the Weber County raw milk operation.

Cryptosporidium in raw goat milk from Treasured Sunrise Farm in Parma, Idaho has sickened at least two people. Consumers who have purchased raw goat milk from the farm on or after August 24 should not drink it. The milk was sold in stores in Boise, Caldwell, Ketchum, and Star.

ISDA has issued a hold order halting all raw milk sales From Treasured Sunrise until further notice. If you purchased raw goat or cow milk from Treasured Sunrise Acres, or any of its raw milk retail outlets either on or after August 24, officials from Treasured Sunrise Acres and ISDA ask that you discontinue consumption and discard the product.

 

USA- Campylobacter Outbreak – Raw Milk – 45 Cases

Utah public health officials are investigating a cluster of illness associated with the consumption of raw or unpasteurized milk. To date, 45 cases of Campylobacter infection have been reported in people who indicated that they consumed raw milk in the week before illness began. Cases have been reported from: Cache, Davis, Morgan, Salt Lake, Utah and Weber counties. Two cases occurred in out of state residents from California and Idaho. Onset dates range from May 9, 2014 to July 21, 2014. The cases range in age from two to 74 years.

All 45 cases are linked to the consumption of raw milk or cream purchased at Ropelato Dairy in Weber County. Utah Department of Agriculture and Food inspectors suspended the dairy’s license to sell raw milk on August 4, 2014, after several tests of raw milk samples taken at the farm were positive for Campylobacter.
