To solve outbreaks, investigators look for common exposures. Watermelon is one thing children in both states ate before they became ill, Food Poisoning Bulletin has learned.

 

 

USA – Cryptosporidium and Campylobacter Raw Milk

Outbreaks of Campylobacter infection in Utah have been linked to raw milk consumption 14 times in the past five years, sickening more than 200 people. The largest of those outbreaks began in May of this year and was announced one week ago when the Utah Deparment of Agriculture and Food announced that it had suspended the Raw Milk for Retail distribution permit held by Ogden’s Ropelato Dairy. As of August 26, state health officials had traced 45 illnesses to the Weber County raw milk operation.

Cryptosporidium in raw goat milk from Treasured Sunrise Farm in Parma, Idaho has sickened at least two people. Consumers who have purchased raw goat milk from the farm on or after August 24 should not drink it. The milk was sold in stores in Boise, Caldwell, Ketchum, and Star.

USA – Cyclospora Update – Texas Cyclospora Outbreak Source is Cilantro from Mexico, Again

Food contaminated with cyclospora sickened at least 304 people in 19 states this summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most of the illnesses, 133, are in Texas where health authorities have identified cilantro imported from Puebla, Mexico as the source of the illnesses. Cilantro from Puebla, Mexico was also the food source of a 2013 cyclospora outbreak in Texas that sickened 270 people.

Cyclospora is a parasite found in tropical or sub-tropical regions. If ingested in its mature state, the parasite causes an infection called cyclosporiasis. Only about 150 of these infections are reported nationwide each year. Normally associated with travel.

Cilantro from Mexico is the source of a cyclospora outbreak in Texas for the second straight summer. At least 126 people in Texas contracted infections from eating food contaminated with the parasite before health officials declared an end to the outbreak late yesterday. Last year, 270 Texans contracted cyclosporiasis from cilantro grown in the same area identified the source this year, Puebla, Mexico.

 

USA – E.coli O157 Outbreak Update

At least 122 people in Alberta have contracted E.coli O157:H7, infections during the last month, according to the Canadian Press. There are 59 confirmed cases in Calgary, 48 in Edmonton, seven in the South, six in the North and two the Central zone.

Health authorities have not yet determined the source of the outbreak. Sprouts have been mentioned as possible source. Some of the case patients who were hospitalized earlier this month told investigators they ate fresh bean sprouts prior to becoming ill.

USa – Recall – Canned Soups and Sauaces – Possible Clostridium botulinum

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is warning consumers not to eat any canned soups or sauces made by Corfinio Foods of Richmond because they were improperly processed. That means they are susceptible to contamination with Clostridium botulinum. This bacteria produces a toxin that can cause illness and death.

Corfinio Foods has suspended production of all of its canned soups and sauces, and the firm is working with officials to come into compliance with state requirements. There have been no reported illnesses to date associated with the consumption of these products

USA – Recall – Oysters – Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Wegmans has posted a recall for Kumamoto Oysters because they may be contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus. This naturally-occurring bacteria can cause foodborne illness if the oysters are eaten raw. There is no word on whether or not any illnesses have been reported.

Mars Chocolate Drinks is recalling branded bottles of sports-cap drinks and 750ml milk drink products with ‘best before’ dates between and including 19 December 2014 and 11 April 2015. This is because they contain a type of the bacteria known as Bacillus, which can cause food poisoning. This means the products are a possible health risk to consumers.

This is because they contain elevated levels of a type of bacteria known as Bacillus, which can cause food poisoning. This means the products are a possible health risk to consumers.

Sunfood of California is recalling organic carob powder because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

The recalled product is Organic Carob Powder in 1 pound, 20 pound, and 55 pound white poly bags. The recalled powder has these lot numbers: 140321,140416,140509,140516,140609,140616, and 140623. The UPC number is 803813-04429 8 and the expiration date is 6/5/2015. The product was distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail order

 

Jordan – 150 Shigella Cases

The Ministry of Health has dealt with over 150 cases of food poisoning in a recent incident in the Shihabieh area in Karak, 140km south of the capital, a Health Ministry official said on Monday.

Bashir Qasir, head of the ministry’s communicable diseases department, said the results of an analysis of stool samples taken from the patients proved the presence of shigella bacteria.
